Guns have become an emotional issue because of children playing with
guns or disgruntled idiots or mental people (whether ongoing or
temporary). Liberal folk take advantage of this issue at opportune
moments to gain political points even though all their brilliance of the
past for control and/or elimination of all firearms have amounted to
zilch. Hence, we now have normal guns referred to as assault weapons,
saturday night specials, military weapons etc. The killings have become
awful but so have the things you mention. OTOH, guns are safe in this
country for the most part compared to cars or swimming pools. It has
more emotional impact than other things so gets more coverage than
parents smacking their kids on the back of the hand and saying no. Being
so political and safe compared to other things , it's a big job but
'don't give up your guns.' Pun intended.

Gun folk drew a line in the sand a long while ago. They saw the
opportunistic approach to weaken the gun owners little by little by
passing laws and rarely enforcing them and every horrific episode
involving guns was also soap box opportunity.
