COLLEGE HAZE, Chapter Two, "Sorority Discipline," F/F pledge paddle

(Note: If you're wondering why one of my characters is called both "Lana" and
"Jane," you haven't read chapter one. It's explained there.)

Chapter Two -- Four weeks into the pledge period, Lana had much material for
her expose. The BUT sorority had many rules and traditions for its pledges to
follow. And, despite the no-hazing edict by State U.'s trustees, pledges
failing to live up to expectations faced punishment by their "big sisters,"
including paddling.
The sorority held a Friday night party during the first week of school to
welcome the pledges, who were given a friendly reception by the active
members. But the atmosphere was decidedly serious the next afternoon as twenty
young women gathered at the BUT house to meet their big sisters and be told
what to expect during the pledge period.
Like the others, Lana was given a pledge paddle, a beanie and a soft-cover
pledge book. The paddle featured a four-inch handle and the face of the
implement was 12 inches long, six inches wide, a half-inch thick and had the
"BUT" letters carved into it.
The pledges would be responsible for decorating their paddles with expressions
of admiration for their big sisters, they were told. But, due to the trustee's
edict, they wouldn't carry the paddles around campus and sleep with them under
their pillows in their dorm rooms as previous pledge classes had done.
Instead, the implements would stay in a locked cabinet at the BUT house and
"brought out as necessary."
The cloth beanies given to the pledges had a checkerboard pattern of green and
red, the colors of mighty State U.'s athletic teams, with the "BUT" letters on
the front. The pledges would wear the caps at all times (except when bathing
and sleeping).
The book provided to each pledge, to be carried by them always, included
lengthy descriptions of BUT lore and tradition. The pledges should set to
learning the material by heart, they were told, as they would be quizzed
regularly.
The book also included a list of rules for pledges, including prohibitions
against cursing, sleeping late on weekdays, skipping class and showing
disrespect to big sisters and other active members. Each book included several
blank pages so demerits could be tallied for breaking rules.
The pledges were also told that they were expected to maintain "B" averages
and should aim for higher. They should make copies for their big sisters of
the syllabuses for all their courses, highlighting when papers and tests were
due, so their academic progress could be monitored.
Finally, the young women were informed that a meeting for pledges with the
whole sorority in attendance would be held at the BUT house each Friday
afternoon. At the gathering, the pledges' weekly performance would be
reviewed, their demerits tallied, and appropriate punishments meted out.
The orientation session broke up and the pledges returned to their
dormitories. Although they laughed and joked among themselves, showing little
outward concern of the challenge ahead, the girls actually felt trepidation.
Their eyes had grown wide at the sight of the hefty pledge paddles. It would
suit them just fine for the implements to remain locked inside the BUT house
cabinet until the end of the eight-week pledging session when the paddles
would be given to the pledges to keep. As they walked back to their dorms, all
pledges save one secretly vowed to study hard and obey pledge rules.
The exception was Lana. An intrepid newspaper reorter, she recognized that
her expose would read best if she experienced the full range of hazing
first-hand, rather than just observing it happening to others.
The sorority girl leading the orientation session implied that paddling was
reserved for pledges who repeatedly failed to measure up to the mark, with
lesser punishments tried first. Lana decided to deliberately mess up enough to
be paddled just once. Then she'd truly know what the hazing experience was
like and wouldn't be short-changing her readers in her story, she reasoned.
So Lana started off her pledge career by intentionally cursing several times
in front of her big sister and other BUT actives, deliberately not wearing her
pledge beanie on numerous occasions and generally being sloppy and
disrespectful. She was quite pleased to soon find herself in hot water with
the active members.
At the first Friday pledge meeting, Lana stood on one leg for several minutes
while balancing her pledge book on her head as her big sister lectured her. At
the conclusion of the talking-to, the sorority girl told Lana she'd be doing
extra chores around the BUT house the following week and better shape up or
she'd be paddled at next Friday's meeting.
Naturally the following week saw little improvement in Lana's behavior. In
fact, she was much much worse.
As Lana stood on one leg with her pledge book atop her head, her big sister
reviewed Lana's demerits for the week in a loud voice.
"Failure to do chores, failure to wear your pledge beanie, sloppy,
disrespectful, foul-mouthed," she shouted. "I'm sorry, but you've left me no
choice. Go get your pledge paddle."
"Yes big sister."
The sorority's president, who looked on with all the other active members,
tossed Lana the key to the cabinet where the paddles were kept. Many of the
active members were smiling. Although all agreed that "Jane" would make an
excellent addition to the sorority, they were quite displeased to find out she
had such an attitude problem. It was high time Jane was taken down a peg or
two, the actives agreed.
The pledges were mainly in shock. "Jane" was very popular with her fellow
pledges, mostly because of the dirty jokes she told and the satirical
imitations of the big sisters she performed when the actives weren't around.
The pledges couldn't quite believe this was happening. At least Jane was the
only one to be paddled and no one else would suffer it, not for another week
anyway.
Lana unlocked the cabinet and pulled out her pledge paddle. Like the other
pledges, Lana had dutifully decorated her paddle with expressions of devotion
to her big sister. Her implement had "I Love My Big Sis" written in cartoony
letters across its face.
"Ha. Ha. You'll see how much I love you after my story comes out," Lana
thought gleefully as she walked back with the paddle.
"What's that smile for?," the sorority girl asked as Lana handed her the
paddle. "I don't think you'll be smiling in a few minutes."
"Now bend over and grab your ankles. You're going to get six swats. And be
sure to say "thank you big sister, may I have another?' after each one."
"Yes big sister."
The sorority girl drew the paddle back in preparation of swatting Lana's
shapely rear end, which on this afternoon was outfitted in tight jeans. Lana
tensed. She'd never been spanked before and didn't know what to expect.
SWAT!!!
"Yeeow," Lana thought, "this really hurts." Her bottom felt like it was on
fire with all the nerve ending registering at once.
"Thank you big sister. May I have another," Lana managed to gasp.
"Yes you may," the sorority girl replied.
"That first swat was for not doing your chores around the house. This second
one is for cursing. I want you to clean up your language, young lady. You have
the worst mouth of anybody in your pledge class."
SWAT!!!
"Yes big sister. I'll try not to curse anymore," Lana said.
"Not try. Do! Now what do you say after each spank?," the sorority girl asked.
"Uh, thank you big sister," said Lana. "May I have another?"
"Yes you may. This swat is for not wearing your pledge beanie on Tuesday."
SWAT!!!
"Ouch! ... Thank you big sister. May I have another, big sister?"
"Yes you may. This swat is for not wearing your beanie on Thursday."
As the big sister drew the paddle back, she added: "There's no excuse for not
wearing your pledge beanie. The BUT beanie signifies that you're among an
elite group chosen to pledge the finest sorority on campus. All the other
freshmen girls envy that cap on your head. Wear it with pride."
SWAT!!!
"Yes big sister," Lana said tearfully. "Thank you big sister. May I have
another?"
"Yes you may. This swat is for your overall snotty attitude."
SWAT!!!
And, quickly, before Lana could shout out her expected refrain, the sorority
girl added:
"And this last one is to remind you that you better shape up or you're gonna
get more next Friday."
SWAT!!!
The spanking over, Lana returned her pledge paddle to the cabinet. She
resisted the urge to rub her aching behind.
"Now come here and give your big sister a hug," the sorority girl called out
after Lana locked away the paddle. Lana did as instructed and all the active
members clapped as the two young women embraced. The pledges joined in the
applause.
After a paddling at the BUT house, it was traditional for big sister and
just-spanked pledge to hug to show that there were no hard feelings and for
the rest of the sorority members to clap to show that the pledge was a good
sport in taking the punishment.
With no other pledge to paddle, the meeting concluded in a few more minutes.
As they walked back to their dorms, one of the pledges asked Lana if the
paddling hurt.
"What do you think?," Lana asked in a sarcastic tone. "Hell yes it hurt. Did
you see the size of that paddle she whacked me with. Of course it hurt."
"Take it from me," Lana told the group. "Remember to wear your stupid beanies.
It's not worth getting whacked."
Figuring that she'd had quite enough first-hand experience with hazing, Lana
decided to be a model pledge for the rest of the pledge period. She was on her
best behavior and received no demerits in the week following her paddling. Her
big sister complemented Lana at the Friday pledge meeting on her improved
attitude.
But the following week, Lana slipped back into her old ways.
On Tuesday morning, she was running late getting ready for class and hurriedly
left her dorm without her pledge beanie. Lana was halfway to the classroom
building before she realized the horrible mistake. She thought about going
back for the beanie, but knew she couldn't.
The professor was a stickler for punctuality and wouldn't let late-arriving
students sign the roll. And her sorority checked class attendance. Lana would
get in as much trouble for being marked absent as she would for being caught
without her pledge beanie.
Lana made it to her class without being spotted by her big sister or another
active. Following the lecture, Lana ran back to her dorm. She was just a few
feet from the building when she heard the sickening sound of her big sister
calling out "'Jane you wait right there. Don't move an inch."
Lana looked over where the sound came from. Her big sister was a good hundred
yards away. How could the sorority girl even tell it was her from that
distance, Lana wondered? Still, Lana's feet remained glued to the ground.
Normally one of the most headstrong people around, Lana found she couldn't
disobey the order of her commanding big sister.
The sorority girl rushed up to Lana. She was apoplectic. While many of the big
sisters cut their pledges slack at times, Lana's big sister was a straight
arrow who took the pledging process very seriously. She was bound and
determined that the three pledges she oversaw would be the best of the class
and "Jane" was letting her down.
"Where's your beanie, pledge?," the sorority girl screamed.
"I'm sorry big sister," Lana sputtered. "I overslept this morning and I was
running late for class and I ..."
The big sister cut her off: "No beanie: five demerits. Sleeping late: five
demerits. Give me your pledge book."
Lana sighed. Ten demerits as of Tuesday morning. Even if she got no more black
marks for the rest of the week, she risked getting a paddling at the Friday
afternoon pledge meeting. At the very least, she'd be using a toothbrush to
scrub the BUT house's toilets and shower stalls all next week.
Oh well, Lana thought resignedly, at least I remembered to have my pledge book
with me. Lana handed the book over and the big sister entered the demerits,
then said:
"I wonder if you've even bothered to open this book. Let's find out."
Lana gulped. She'd seen a handful of pledges quizzed orally on their knowledge
of BUT lore and tradition contained in the pledge book. None of them did very
well and all the studying Lana had done so far was to quickly skim through the
book several days ago.
The big sister fired out several questions and Lana failed miserably in her
responses.
"I might of known," the sorority girl said as she tossed the book back to
Lana.
"If you're going to have such a poor attitude, take the rest of the week off.
Don't bother wearing your beanie, don't bother coming around the BUT house and
don't bother hanging out with the other pledges. Just have a nice relaxed time
the next few days and think about whether you really want to be a member of
our sorority. If you do, show up at the pledge meeting on Friday and we'll
deal with your attitude problem. We'll deal with it good and proper."
"Yes big sister," Lana said in a small voice.
The sorority girl stormed off. Lana waited until she was well out of hearing
distance then stuck out her tongue and made a loud raspberry sound.
A few minutes later, Lana was talking on the phone in her dorm room to her
editor back in Big City. She told him the whole story.
The editor was very pleased.
"Great Lana, just great," he beamed. "You couldn't have played it any better.
The story's going to be fantastic. I'll see you back here in a month."
"But I want to come home now," Lana whined. "I've got more than enough
material already."
"No way," the editor growled. "You're to stay until the pledge period is over.
That's what we agreed."
He continued: "Don't tell me you're afraid of those college girls. A little
paddling's not going to hurt you. Why you kids have it easy these days. Let me
tell you, when I was a lad at State U. some thirty years ago I pledged the
meanest fraternity on campus. Paddlings, push-ups, we went through it all. But
I made it just fine."
Lana held the phone away from her ear and rolled her eyes as the editor waxed
nostalgic for several more minutes about his happy college days. Finally he
said goodbye and Lana hung up.
So Lana spent the next few days worrying about what was in store for her at
the Friday afternoon pledge meeting. Occasionally Lana came across BUT pledges
and actives on campus, but they avoided eye contact and wouldn't speak to her.
Apparently, Lana was persona non grata for the time being.
Finally Friday rolled around.
Lana paid scant attention to her classes. She was too nervous to concentrate.
The paddling Lana got a couple of weeks ago really hurt and she couldn't help
thinking that the punishment to come in a few hours would be much worse.
The last class finished and Lana started the long walk across campus to the
BUT house. It was a gorgeous Friday afternoon in mid October. The sun shone
brilliantly and it was unusually warm for the time of year. The drop in
humidity with the onset of fall made it very pleasant indeed.
The State U. campus was abuzz with excitement. Classes were over for the week
and State U.'s arch rival, Big City U., was coming to campus tomorrow for a
big football game. State U.'s fraternities and sororities had Friday night
parties planned in recognition of the important matchup. In fact, the SUD
brothers and BUT sisters had a joint party scheduled, the first such event of
the year.
But Lana felt only dread.
Because of the warm weather, Lana was wearing short plaid pants made out of
cotton, a white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, white ankle
socks and tennis shoes. Of course her pledge beanie was atop her head. She
dare not forget it this time.
Halfway to the BUT house, Lana suddenly realized with dismay that the thin
cotton shorts and nylon panties she had on provided little "paddle
protection." She ought to have worn her sturdiest pair of jeans and a couple
of extra pairs of panties underneath.
Oh well. Too late now.
Lana arrived at the BUT house, but waited a few minutes gathering her courage
to go in. Several of the pledges rushed past Lana not even bothering to look
at her. Finally, Lana entered the building.
"Well look who's here," Lana's big sister called out as Lana came into the
large rec room where the pledge meetings took place.
"Are you here to tell us you're quitting? Or do you want back in?"
"I want back in," said Lana.
The sorority girl walked over and stood before Lana face-to-face.
"Good girl," the big sister said. "I knew you weren't a quitter. But give me
your beanie. You're not back to being a pledge just yet. We have to deal with
that attitude problem of yours first. In the meantime, we have a special hat
for you."
Another active came over and handed Lana a dunce cap made out green cardboard
paper. The cap had "DISGRACE" painted on it in large red letters. Lana put the
cap on.
"Now go over to that footstool in front of us," the big sister said. "I want
you to kneel on it facing us with your hands behind your back. And don't make
a sound. We actives have important business to discuss with our pledges and
can't be disturbed."
Lana did as instructed and the meeting got underway. Although kneeling didn't
bother her at first, after several minutes the position got very
uncomfortable. She wished the meeting would hurry up and finish. She wanted to
get this over with.
At last the sorority president announced, "we have one final matter to attend
to" and handed the floor over to Lana's big sister. She walked over next to
Lana and turned and faced the gathering.
"As we all know, Jane hasn't been with us the past few days," the big sister
said.
"She can't seem to get her act together as a pledge, so finally I told her to
take a few days off and think seriously about whether she really wants to be
in our sorority. Now Jane's come to us and says she wants back in. We actives
have had a long talk and we think maybe Jane deserves a second chance. We
think she means well, but, quite frankly, her performance as a pledge up to
now has been a ..."
"DISGRACE!," all the active members shouted.
"So Jane, if you want back in, you have to convince us you'll do better," the
big sister said. "You have to convince us you're sincere about improving your
attitude and changing your ways."
Lana's ears burned. She was never one to take criticism good-naturedly and
couldn't believe she was letting this 21-year-old sorority girl, in actuality
three years her junior, put her through such a ringer.
But as much as Lana wanted to curse out her big sister and the other actives
and storm out of the sorority house never to return, Lana knew she couldn't
quit now. She couldn't let the editor down.
So Lana, in response to repeated questions from her big sister and other
actives, began a long speech promising faithfully to mend her ways.
Yes, she would memorize the contents of her pledge book. Yes, she would wear
her pledge beanie everywhere. Yes, she'd do all her assigned chores cleaning
up the sorority house. No, she wouldn't curse. And, yes, she did realize what
a great honor it was to be chosen to pledge the mighty BUT house. She'd try
her best to live up to the high standard from now on.
After about ten minutes, Lana's big sister said, "I'm nearly convinced. But
before we let you rejoin your fellow pledges, I want to make doubly sure that
you'll improve your attitude. Fetch your pledge paddle."
"Yes big sister," said Lana, glad to finally get out of a kneeling position.
Lana got the paddle out of the cabinet and handed it to her big sister. She
was told to turn around and grab her ankles and, as she bent over, the dunce
cap fell off her head.
"This is partly my fault," the big sister said as she drew the paddle back. "I
was too easy on you the last time I spanked you. I won't make that mistake
again."
The big sister swung the paddle forward with both hands delivering a sharp
swat to Lana's rear end. The inpact of the spank lifted Lana up on her toes.
"Yow!," Lana shouted, before quickly adding, "thank you big sister, may I have
another?"
"Yes you may."
SWAT!!!
"Thank you big sister, may I have another?"
"I appreciate your asking so nicely. Good manners are always in favor at the
BUT house."
SWAT!!!
Tears were starting to flow down Lana's face. Nevertheless, she quickly called
out: "Thank you big sister, may I have another?"
"Yes you may."
SWAT!!!
Lana bravely took four more spanks without complaint.
But her bottom was aching and after spank number eight she found herself
saying, almost against her will, "Please big sister, don't you think that's
enough swats for one paddling?"
"Well, I was going to stop," the sorority girl said. "But you know that last
comment was out-of-line. I'm afraid I'm going to have to extend your paddling
for that little remark. So it's four more swats for you. And be sure to thank
me after each one."
"Yes big sister," Lana said resignedly.
SWAT!!!
"Ow, ow, ow ... thank you big sister. May I have another, big sister?"
The big sister swung the hefty paddle forward. SWAT!!! The impact of the spank
again lifted Lana up on her toes.
"Please big sister," cried Lana, "I'm so sore. I don't think I can take any
more."
"Yes you can," the big sister said in a surprisingly kind voice. "BUT women
are brave. Just two more. You can do it."
"Yes big sister," Lana sobbed.
"What do you say?"
"Thank you big sister. May I have another?"
SWAT!!!
"Oh, oh, oh ... Thank you big sister. May I have another, big sister? It's the
last one, right?"
"Yes, last one coming through. Get ready, get set ..."
SWAT!!!
Lana stood up. This time, she couldn't help but rub her bottom for a few
seconds. Next she returned the paddle to the cabinet, then heard the familiar
voice saying, "Now come and give your big sister a hug."
The actives and pledges burst into applause as the two young women embraced.
As she held Lana tight, the sorority girl whispered into her ear, "I love you
like a sister."
The big sister let Lana loose and placed her pledge beanie back on her head.
"Welcome back," the big sister said. "Now go hug your other sisters."
Lana hugged the other young women, first the actives and then the pledges. As
they embraced, each one whispered to Lana, "I love you like a sister." And,
much to her amazement, Lana found herself saying the same words back.
After she hugged the last pledge, the room once again burst into applause.
Lana felt an incredible warm glow. And, at that moment, something inside of
her changed.
Although she still recognized that she was playacting, that she wasn't really
an 18-year-old college freshman, but a 24-year-old newspaper reporter secretly
investigating college hazing, Lana for the first time felt a sisterly bond
with the pledges and the actives.
The experience -- the few days of exclusion from sorority life, the ordeal of
the punishment and the warm reception upon her return to the group --
transformed Lana. A part of her had become very firmly alligned with the
sorority.
Lana walked back to her dorm room in a very cheerful mood. There was the big
party tonight put on jointly by the BUTs and the SUDs and Lana found herself
looking forward to the affair. But there was another event to attend first
that Lana was especially longing to see.
Lana and Kirk had a few furtive meetings so far to compare the status of their
investigations. Much to her chagrin, Lana discovered that Kirk had yet to be
hazed by the SUD actives.
But tonight that would change. For, in about two hours time, the annual tackle
football game between the SUD actives and the fraternity's pledges would take
place. And the pledges' uniforms, or, more accurately, their lack of them,
were sure to make for jolly good fun.
Lana and the other BUT pledges would serve as cheerleaders for the big game.
And most of fraternity and sorority row would be on hand as spectators. For
the spectacle of the SUD pledges battling mightily on the field clad only in
their jockstraps was considered the ultimate in sporting entertainment.
Furthermore, before the game, the SUD pledges would make their acquaintance
with the fraternity's legendary house paddle, "The Big Board."
As she walked back to her dorm room to change into her cheerleading outfit, Lana chuckled in anticipation of Kirk's coming ordeal.
To be continued ... Next chapter: "The Big Board"
