What has worked best for you as far as equipment and
techniques?
I'm using the hair trimmer attachment of my electrical shaver to cut the
pubic hair short; for the shaft and scrotum a normal razor (mine is an
old Gillette Mach 3) is sufficient.
Personal experience: my girlfriend rather likes my pubic hair short
trimmed instead of a complete shave (the stubbly hair a day or so after
shaving is quite irritating for her).

Similar - I use a Braun beard trimmer on the short setting, and then
shave in the shower. I used a 3-blade razor with a swiveling head. I
shave about every 2 days, although sometimes I just let it grow out for
a week and keep it short trimmed.

Sounds like a good beard trimmer along with manual
shaving is best way? yes?
any advice on decent beard trimmers for this purpose?
Brand and model that is? I need to buy something as I
have nothing!
Is this a serious question? I usually use a 12 inch radial arm saw when my
chain saw is out of gas. They cut hairs like nobodies business, but, you do
have to be a little careful!
Yes, it probably is, as there is a trend towards lack of body hair. Men seem
to be growing beards though.
And so we arrive at your answer, which is not serious
I bought an inexpensive Braun beard trimmer - about $30 US. Has an
adjustable trim length setting. Don't know the model number, but it
comes in black or charcoal gray. If you don't have a beard, then you can
probably go with a cheaper model if you can find one.

I just use a regular electric beard trimmer with the first plastic guard
on. If I want it to actually be totally smooth / shaven, I shave
thereafter with my regular razor, but I do that very rarely -- mostly I
just trim every so often.
.
Even if one isn't going for a "lack of body hair" as a general thing,
one might want to shave once in a while just for variety. But I think a
lot of people do trim on occasion, and "trimmed" is not the same as
lacking body hair entirely or wanting to. (I know that I trim for
pretty much entirely practical purposes, rather than fashionable ones.)
.
I believe mine is also a Braun. It might be older -- it didn't come
with settings like that -- but it came with a number of plastic guards
that you put over it. It's rechargeable, which is about the only thing
that's turned out to be unexpectedly handy. It can be nice to trim on
the edge of the tub just before a shower so that I can easily rinse the
shavings away, the the shower is not very close to the plug in our
bathroom (I think this is some kind of law now for new structures).
