Since I seem to know more about this Hassan fellow than the
righties who
think all Muslims are criminals, and the lefties who spend their time
insulting
the righties.... I'll post some facts and opinions here..
Hassan qualified for a "fast track" program where the army paid
his way
thru college, thru medical school, and thru his residency, with the
requirement
that he spend X amount of time being an army doctor when he graduated.
As an army doctor, he was automatically made an officer, and made a
salary
that was competitive with a civilian doctor......He was happy with
that
arrangement, worked his ass off to keep it, and the army was happy
with his
performance. Both parties were glad to keep their "contract"...
HOWEVER, around the time his residency ended and he started
active
duty (I don't know the exact timeline on this), the US declared war
on his
ancestral roots and especially on his religion. Like most Muslims in
the
US, he was discriminated against in many ways, from probable joking
around
with his associates, to an aura of suspicion from his superiors......
Yet, Hassan was willing to meet his obligation with the army . He
really had
no choice since as the army had invested maybe a half million in his
education and
they insisted that he fulfill his end of the deal and stay in the army
for X years.
Until Hassan found he had to go to the middle east and support
fighting against
his religion, he was OK.... When his deployment became imminent, he
went
ape shit ( as psychology professionals have a propensity to do ) and
started a
BLOG railing against Muslim "oppression". He hired a lawyer in an
attempt to
leave the army so he wouldn't have to fight against his religion. The
army was
not impressed --- he had to go and support the killing of his fellow
Muslims...
So Hassan went crazy and took a couple of pistols into a rec
center ,where
there was not likely to be any resistance, shouted "Allah", and began
shooting
as many people as he could, determined to martyr himself in the name
of
Islam rather than be forced to suborn death against his fellow
zealots.....
That's what happened folks.
If the army had examined his situation, and made some sort of
alternate path
for those who made a comittment to the army BEFORE the US declared
war
on Muslims, it would never had happened. One possibility was duty in
Alaska,
Antarctica, Timbuk3 (more isolated than Timbuktu), or some station
where he
didn't have to listen to stories from soldiers who were killing his
fellow Muslims being killed, I don't think
he would have objected at all.... But, the army, just like the rest
of the present
administration, just told him to fuck off and follow orders....
So, while I don't support his actions, and would gladly volunteer
to be the man
who puts the needle in his arm (this is Texas ), I do understand the
circumstances
that led up to his "going whacko"...
I hope he is tried in a Texas civilian court rather than a
military court.
No military court has applied the death penalty in over 30 years.
In Texas, we execute around one person a month....
While other states are thinking of abolishing the death penalty,
in
Texas we have put in an ExpressLine....
" If you kill somebody in Texas, we're gonna kill you right back " -
Ron White
So, that is the story. I may understand why a snake wants to
bite me, but I
will kill it just the same. Same for Hassan. Damn shame, all
this....

You stated he had to go where he would be "fighting against his religion".
In the first place, someone with his skill would not be in combat but would
be providing counseling and evaluation of soldiers' problems, work in line
with his training. But he would surely be exposed more directly to civilian
casualties and I can certainly understand how he would believe it's because
of their religion.
I heard today that a few days after he moved into his apartment in Texas,
his car was keyed and his bumpersticker that read "Allah is Love" was torn
off. Like you said, it's a damn shame and certainly there was mishandling
by the army. That's nothing new though, they have been sending soldiers
back with all kinds of health problems, physical and mental. We really need
to get out of these stupid wars.
