Anyone had a cataract operation recently?

What's a cataract operation like these days? I had one ten or fifteen
years ago. Then I had to wear an eye patch for about three days and avoid
bending over. I was not supposed to drive with the patch - I had to have
a driver to get home, then back again to have the eye patch removed. No
pain. Otherwise uneventful except for suspense in wondering if my eye
still worked while waiting for patch to be removed. It was fully covered
ny Medicare and supplement.

Can I drive this time? Cabs are very expensive.

Is that still how it goes?

How safe is it? I keep hearing about hospital infections and errors. I
know the eye center is not a hospital but still...

TIA

Ken

People with deadly diseases go to regular hospitals, not eye centers.
I
would think having these deadly bacteria and viruses that are being
talked about on TV would be no more likely in an eye center than
at a grocery store or a Walmart.
I'll bet you can google "eye cataract surgery recovery times" and
get
several links explaining the present procedures and most of your
questions. I understand, from my own eye doctor, that it is very
routine
now and very low risk.
Let us know how it turns out for you. I will need it myself
one
of these days.... as most of us will.

I wore bifocals and had both eyes done last year, one at a time, about 6
months apart. Both times, they sent a van to pick me up and bring me
back, and also for the next days follow-up. You'll definitely need to
find transportation if they don't provide it.

When the cataract was removed, they implanted a lens in my right eye to
correct for distant vision, and in my left eye to correct for near
(reading) vision. I slept through both procedures.

I had to apply eye drops several times a day for a week or two. There
was a patch, made of rigid plastic, I used for 3 - 4 nights to protect
the eye when I slept.

Afterward, I needed to bring a voucher to the registry to remove the
restriction for glasses when I drive. Now I can read, drive, etc.
without needing glasses.

I did have glasses made for times when I want both near and distant
vision in both eyes. Very seldom do I wear them.

No matter how low the risk, there's no guarantee. I would never think of
doing the second eye until I was sure The first was exactly what I wanted.

Your best option now is to go for it and take it one step at a time.

Good luck.

I was hoping to hear about experiences of those who recently actually had
the operation, rather than from doctors and clinics who do the operations
that are available through Google.

My experiences have been very enjoyable, except at times like this when
I can clearly see the insincerity of someone's question.
