My sister and I were exploring the Cotswalds area in England,
searching out ancestoral sites. Warwick Castle was not included
in our plans, but we were near, so we stopped. At the "Ghost
Tower," we found that the murdered man was Fulke Greville, who is
in our ancestral line.
Altho flash pictures are forbidden, my sister (naughty girl)
wanted a picture of the portrait of Fulke, hanging on the wall.
When her pictures were developed, this picture looks as tho a
sheet is held over the portrait.
The negatives on either side are OK, so it does not appear to
be a film defect. The picture is too high on the wall for
someone to be standing in front of it. There wasn't glass on the
portrait, so it doesn't seem to be glare from flash.
Here is a description, which is the best I can draw on this
computer:

bottom of neg
draw a slightly curving line from 1 to 2
draw a straight line from 2 to 3
a slightly curving line from 3 to 4 to 5
Enclosed area on left hand side is white (thick neg)
area on right hand side is dark, (thin neg) and is the way that
the picture would normally be in low light circumstances.
The face in the portrait is completely covered, only part of arm
and hand can be seen in "normal" part of neg.
We're stymied: If anyone has expertise in this type of
quandry, will send copy of picture and contact of negs.
Thanks.

It seems to me the answer is a film ("sheet") of light being reflected.
Ghosts- I don't believe in them. If they existed those I kia in viet nam
would be haunting me now and they're stone cold dead. Chalk them up to
"Uncle Sam" and orders but "ghosts"- fooey.
