Cuttack - At least 12 places of religious importance,
including 10 temples, were razed to the ground by the
district administration in Cuttack on Monday. All these
religious structures had come up illegally on Government
lands and the district administration is demolishing them
following orders from the Odisha High Court.
The temple demolition drive was launched in the city from
May 1 and the authorities identified at least 207 such
structures in the entire city. While the administration
has been able to pull down as many as 20 illegal
structures till date, there are plans to demolish all
other identified illegal structures before the onset of
monsoon, sources said. After a two-day break on account
of Saturday and Sunday, the administration revived its
drive from early hours on Monday.
As the day broke, bulldozers and vibrators along with
some 20 platoons of police and officials arrived at
Ganesh Ghat located on the left embankment of river
Kathajodi.
The Sai Mandir located there was the first casualty as
about six bulldozers and a vibrator brought the majestic
shrine down within minutes as wailing devotees watched
the scene silently.
