* We invite people to write essays concerning human rights and
other closely related subjects. We encourage to the young people from
schools and universities to participate.
* Judges will be looking for originality of vision, knowledge of
the subject, skill in presenting an argument, age, and literary
merit.
Rules:
* All essays must be original; no previously published material
will be accepted.
* Each participant can submit a maximum of two essays.
* Quotes and references must be clearly marked throughout the
essay and properly cited. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure
that all quoted material (including statistics) is correct, relevant,
and accurate. The judges will verify your citations and in case of
erroneous, they might disqualify the essay.
* Any form of plagiarism will result in automatic
disqualification.
* Every participant must provide the following personal details *:
o Valid Postal Address
o Valid Email Address
o Name and Surname
o Age
* HumanRightsDefence reserves the right to publish the winning
essay under the domain name www.humanrightsdefence.org.
* The decision of the Jury is final and is not subject to an
appeal.
* Copyrights of winning entry will apply to HumanRightsDefence.
* HumanRightsDefence is held responsible for ensuring the author’s
name is kept and publicized with the essay. It also reserves the right
to remove/delete the essay without notice to or consent by the author.
* Upon request by the author, he/she may use ‘anonymous’ as
author.
* There is no limit on the contestant’s age or occupation.
Everyone is welcome.
Guidelines:
* Entries should be no shorter than 1000 words. However, we would
like to emphasize that quality is more important than quantity.
* You may include images in your essay
* Your essay should include the following:
o An introduction, which introduces the topic and contains
an explanation of your position.
o A body, which contains the main content of your essay
o A conclusion, which summarizes the subject, research, and
analysis presented in the essay and sets forth your conclusions.Your
essay should also include notes and/or a bibliography except when
using ‘APA style’:
+ Reference notes (footnotes or endnotes) give the
sources of your information or ideas. Footnotes are placed at the
bottom of the page where the information appears. Alternatively, you
may gather all the notes at the end of the text as “end notes”.
+ A bibliography is a list of the works that you have
referred to in your essay or have consulted in order to write it.
Essays are encouraged to use a variety of sources—academic journals,
news magazines, newspapers, books, government documents, publications
from research organizations, etc..
We also encourage the adaption of the following guideline from the
“National Peace Essay Contest 07-08”:
The Internet or World Wide Web should not be the only source for your
essay. Be aware that you may encounter "republished" or "third
generation" information on the Internet that is inaccurate or
improperly attributed. When citing Internet sources, you must include
the following information: author(s), title of work, Internet address,
and date information was accessed. Detailed instructions can be
obtained from the manuals listed above. For the purposes of this
essay, Internet sources should be listed separately from non-
electronic sources, such as books, magazines, and newspapers.
First Prize: The winning entry will receive a cheque of €200 and get
their essay published on www.humanrightsdefence.org
Second Prize: entry will receive a cheque of €75 and get their essay
published on www.humanrightsdefence.org
Third Prize: entry will receive a cheque of €50 and get their essay
published on www.humanrightsdefence.org
