* Olive oil, nuts may help improve cognitive function, study says

Study participants who ate a Mediterranean-style diet with extra-
virgin olive oil or nuts had significantly better cognitive
function test scores compared with those on a low-fat control
diet, Spanish researchers reported in the Journal of Neurology
Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. Researchers said the olive oil and
nuts have antioxidant properties and the Mediterranean diet
contains foods high in polyphenols, which are linked to improved

* Federal budget cuts shut down Earth monitoring projects

Federal budget cuts known as sequestration are shutting down some
Earth monitoring projects by the U.S. Geological Survey including
