Bush Refuses To Interrupt His Final Vacation As Middle East Crisis
Escalates

In an effort to “prevent Palestinians from attacking towns in
southern Israel” with rockets, Israel today undertook its third day of
offensive military airstrikes in the Palestinian territory of Gaza,
raising the death toll to more than 300. The Palestinian casualty
numbers have been described as the highest over such a brief period
since the 1967 Six-Day war. Scores of Israelis have been wounded — and
at least one killed — by rocket attacks fired by Palestinians. Israeli
Defense Minister Ehud Barak called the situation “all out war.”

While Bush has been briefed on the situation by Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, he has
opted not to interrupt his final vacation as president to make a
public statement on the crisis. For someone who has enjoyed the most
vacation days as sitting president — including days spent relaxing in
comfort during Hurricane Katrina and in the lead-up to 9/11 — it
shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that Bush prioritizes vacationing
over crisis management. ABC News reports:

Even an emerging crisis in the Middle East, one he pledged to
resolve just 13 months ago, has not drawn President George W. Bush
from his final vacation before leaving office. Despite his personal
pledge at Annapolis last year to broker a deal between Israel and the
Palestinians before 2009, this weekend Bush sent his spokesmen to
comment in his stead. […]

Since departing Washington for Crawford on Friday, President Bush
has made no attempt to be seen in public. In fact, he has yet to leave
his ranch.

Today, in a press briefing delivered from the “Western White House” in
Crawford, TX, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe was asked what is
on Bush’s schedule today. In addition to receiving “updates on the
ongoing situation,” Johndroe said, “I expect he’ll probably ride his
bicycle today and spend time with Mrs. Bush.”

Those people should be none of our concern.
One would hope that by now we've learnt our lesson about butting
in on the civil wars of others.

Count your blessings. At least he won't screw it up any worse than he
already has.

I remember he did interrupt his vacation and fly back to Washington
during the Terry Schiavo case, though. You know if somebody wanted to
get Bush's attention the way to do it might be to round up a brain-
dead body, stick a bunch of tubes in it, and then threaten to pull
them out :-)

Good one. And true. Guess it has to be juicy PR material to
throw to their holy-roller base, tho. Prez Cheney did that to the
entire U.S. economy, and all we've got are these I.O.U.'s from
formerly-American corporations that now maintain one small office in
NY, D.C., and L.A..

That's exactly what I was trying to say. Somebody needs to come up
with some good, juicy, PR material to throw to the Republican's holy-
roller base. That would be the best way to get Bush to interrupt his
vacation.

**********

That is also related to the fundamentalist belief in the "magical
big-daddy-in-the-sky" who rules whether it is time to die or not. Bush has
been totally in their thrall since he took office.

Keeping a brain dead body alive until it wastes away to 40 lbs of bones and
skin is unbelievably cruel. This is not the natural way of things," so we
need to be able to stop the process from continuing when all is hopeless....
by pulling the plug!

Years ago people simply died when they were no longer able to eat or take
fluids. In searching for ways to prevent suffering we have created new
ways to suffer. How anyone could think that was a good thing is beyond me.

If there is a chance of the person coming back to a decent quality of life,
it can be a blessing, just not if their brain is dead or no possibility of
recovery.

Better he should stay on vacation.
The man is too inept to trust with a crisis.

Maybe that is because he has no problem with what Israel is doing?

It's understandable that you'd instinctively pin your hopes for
mature leadership on the incoming administration. But no matter how
we may feel about the continuing failure of leadership the nation is
experiencing right now, Obama simply isn't president yet, as he
pointed out in so many words during November. We'll just have to wait
it out and hope that Cheney/Bush don't stumble into fresh disasters..

It's clear to me tht as long as Bush does not do what his political
enemies want to be done, then "Bush is wrong". Furthermore, if he does
not do waht the Left wants to be done, he is also brain dead.

If a football or basketball team does not surrender the ball to the
opponent so that the opponent can score, then the that basketball ot
football team is wrong. Iget it!

If BO won't lower my taxes, BO is wrong, and also brain dead.

I get it!

When the cable news shows talk about where Bush went wrong and his
popularity plummeted, they always mention Iraq and Katrina. It's
amazing to me how they could forget that teeny-weeny little episode
that disgusted a lot of Americans.

Maybe he could bring the people in Gaza back from the dead like he
tried to do with Terri Schiavo.

Well, when you put it that way... yes, it is just as well that he
has thrown up his hands and swaggered off into the sunset.

I don't either. But we're not the ones who were elected, and
we're not getting the big bucks for knowing what to do in case of
international fires. The U.S. rightwing stays too tightly focused on
petty gossip and petty jockeying for position within this country.
Cheney, Bush, et al are simply not paying attention to their *job*.

Sort of a big finale for Bush's magic act? "For my final feat of
legerdemain..."
