But despite a mountain of legal troubles, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio
remains popular with voters and has more than $3.4 million in the bank for
his November re-election campaign.
The Justice Department sued the five-term sheriff on Thursday on allegations
that his officers racially profile Latinos a move that has his critics
saying that voters will finally be turned off and his supporters saying the
development will only make him more beloved among voters who want a tough
sheriff who doesn't back down from anyone.
"He's the new Wyatt Earp," said Tom Morrissey, chairman of the Arizona
Republican Party in a reference to the Arizona lawman made famous by the gun
fight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone. "The guy's legendary.˛
"What he stands for resonates across the country," said Morrissey, also a
retired chief U.S. Marshal. "Hundreds sometimes thousands of people cheer
this man, give him standing ovations everywhere he speaks. That speaks
volumes."
He said Arpaio's hardline stance on illegal immigration and his tough talk
have driven his popularity.
"He tells it like it is. He's not polished, and a lot of times you never
know what's going to come out of his mouth," Morrissey said. "The truth has
a certain ring and Joe Arpaio speaks in that realm."
Even as the Justice Department brought the lawsuit down against Arpaio,
saying that he abused his power and violated the Constitution, the sheriff
himself held a news conference and showed no signs of backing down.
"I will fight this to the bitter end," a visibly angry Arpaio said, adding
that the case will give him a chance to finally see what evidence
authorities have to back up claims. "I'm very happy that we are being sued
because now we can make them put up."
He said nothing is going to affect his chances of winning in November.
"They know that I'm going to get elected. It's a national issue," he said.
"I'm the poster boy. The national press is picking this up again ... I can
get elected on pink underwear."
Arpaio has built his reputation in part by making inmates wear pink
underwear, work in chain gangs and jailing them in tents.
His profile got even bigger when pushed for a stronger role for local police
to enforce immigration law, launching 20 patrols looking for illegal
immigrants since January 2008.
Thursday's lawsuit comes as part of efforts to enforce a federal law that
bans police from systematically violating constitutional rights.
Justice Department officials first leveled the allegations against Arpaio in
December, saying a culture of disregard for basic constitutional rights
prevailed at his office.
Arpaio denies wrongdoing and dismisses the case as a politically motivated
attack by the Obama administration.
Arpaio's office is accused of punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking
Spanish and launching some patrols based on complaints that never reported a
crime but conveyed concerns about dark-skinned people congregating or
speaking Spanish.
The lawsuit also says that Arpaio's office has virtually no policies or
procedures designed to prevent or address discriminatory policing, and has
no system in place to track any alleged misconduct by deputies during
traffic stops, arrests or complaints.

Earl, Here in southern US, most all police ossifers are bullys and will pick
on anyone they can, including the name calling, everyone is a blah, blah,
blah, MF. That is the cops way. The discrimination suit has no standing
against local, current, community standards. It is the Feds responsibility
to show that these are immigrants, US jurisdiction, v.s. illigal aliens, local
jurisdiction. An immigrant is one that has at least applied for immigration.
The US has no problem with those that have applied for immigration but
cannot pass the test within the required time, called "Illigal immigrants".

Law a bit more exact that the vague term "standards".

The problem is that police powers became too broad and stop and ask
for identity was practiced in an illegal manner. Asking anybody
who looks Hispanic to prove their identity is too invasive.
Hox many Americans can prove their citizenship on the spot.
The US has no ID card system as France does. $
I have visited Arizona prisons several times and each time
they wanted a driver license as an ID, and were not happy
when I showed them my French license. So I used my American
passport and they did not like that either. But they accepted
the passport. Finally. It was easier checking into ane Arizona
motel, which wanted an ID. The manager was from India and accepted
a foreign ID.

Years ago, when this guy was out getting support for the office...Az
had a bunch of bozos in the office for a number of previous years-one
a lawnmower repair guy....I was at a breakfast where Joe spoke.
He scared the hell out of me!
With all his current troubles, he will stand on the fact that he is an
elected offical and thus he's doing what the electorate want him to
do. Don't count him out...the Sun City cohort really likes him not to
mention the large group of rednecks in the County. He is one
expensive elected official though and maybe this fact will do him in.

Everyone that is an immigrant Has an ID card that says so and
a sponser, everyone who is a guest worker has a green card.
Was the Sheriff doing anything illgal? Was the President doing
anything illegal, when his bully SS agents tried to stiff a worker in
the drug capitol of the world? Has the US government provided
funds to hire trained police rather than bullys?
The problem is not with immigrants or guest workers, it is with
illegal aliens! Ask for ID of anyone that apears to be in the country illegaly. This is similar to, seach the vehicle of anyone
that appears to be transporting dope.
The Dept of Justice has no case! IF they want to stop police
bullys, start with Washington DC that is run by congress!
This is only a turf battle between the US goverment and the local government
Illegal aliens are a big problem in the southern states. Ask any
Rancher of Mexican descent in Texas or Arizona. The US government that is to enforce US laws does nothing. That government can't afford it either.

I have a green card (it isn't green anymore). I know I'm
theoretically supposed to have it on my person, but the bloody thing cost $400 when I renewed it this year, so it's in my safe-deposit box instead. I also have 16 credit cards
and credit-card sized things in my wallet, so the last thing
I need is more stuff in my wallet, particularly since nobody
has ever asked to see my alien registration card except when I'm crossing the border. And I don't pretend to be American - in fact I deny it politely but firmly. Even after 60 years though, most people can still detect that I'm not American. I was chatting with a couple of girls yesterday when, for "1/2", I said "hawf" instead of the American "Heyaff", and realized as I said it that would be a tipoff.
I should give straight guys lessons on how to strike up
conversations with girls. I seem to be better at it than most of them are. There is one drawback though, which is that I have no ulterior motivation. The girls usually pick up on that, I think.

It wouldn't help. Women spend their entire lives being "checked out" by men and they have a second sense telling them that you are safe. Perhaps it is something like "gaydar" but it seems to work.
Older men are generally accepted as safe by women too. Just watch who gets the hugs - it is not the macho young dudes! At least there is something good about getting old!

At 80 I am out of the loop.
I do strike up conversations with people walking their dogs,
if it is a nice looking dog.

Appear to be interested in, what they are interested in.
The girls seem to know when someone is hitting on them!
They will put up with it, if you are buying.

As an old joke goes:
"Will you sleep with me for a thousand pounds?"
"OK."
"How about for ten pounds then?"

George Bernard Shaw, I believe.
"Edith Nesbit was one of the many women who he tried to seduce. She wrote to
a friend: "George Bernard Shaw... has a fund of dry Irish humour that is
simply irresistible. He is a clever writer and speaker - is the grossest
flatterer I ever met, is horribly untrustworthy as he repeats everything he

That doesn't sound familiar to me, but if so it might
be in the preface to "Mrs. Warren's Profession", though it doesn't feel to me to have the mood of the play that
follows it.
You're earlier post that had something like
"He who spends money that isn't his'n
"Must pay it back, or go to prison"
sounds like Ogden Nash.

Shaw may be my second-favourite personality in history,
after Shelley.

Yes that is a small part of the problem. Mostly the aliens do not work, but mooch from the real workers, and collect bennys from the US government!
