Christ showed justification by faith in the real Scriptural
Gospel to enable the Protestant Reformation:
faith alone in Christ alone to impute his righteousness
to us so that he justifies us and gives us eternal life.
This was the opposite of Catholic "justification"
which claims to be by faith plus repentance,
and by imparted (actual, not imputed) righteousness.

The Catholics now note that in the centuries since
the Reformation, the Protestants including even
Lutherans except for some Older, have been moving
back toward the Catholic "justification" by attributing
to faith some goodness such as a desire to do right,
or a change of mind about God, or that repentance
(contrition) and penance are needed for justification
(Ref: online Catholic Encyclopedia: Justification).

The clouding of the real Gospel by retaining infant
baptism and glorified sacraments from Catholicism
in the Reformation that have diverted trust from Christ
has allowed the false Catholic "gospel" of "salvation"
by "faith" plus repentance to replace the real Gospel.
Without the real unclouded Gospel, Protestantism
has produced the thousands of denominations
and the hundreds of millions of people,
that except for the believing remnant of relatively few,
are trusting in their own "righteousness"
rather than trusting Christ to be
their Righteous Substitute who would impute
his own righteousness as though it were theirs
so that they would have eternal life.

Thank you for the observation.

Christ set the world situation for the Reformation
by centuries of competition between Germany to the north
and Rome to the south,
and then brought in Luther.
