In the real Gospel of Christ
(not the clouded Gospel nor the false "gospel")
the righteousness of God
which is the righteousness of Christ
is clearly revealed so that people may trust in Christ alone
to be their entire righteousness for salvation.
The purpose of the law was to bring us to Christ
by showing that righteousness
cannot come by our efforts
so that we might be justified by faith in Christ
(Galatians 3:21-25).
We are justified by trusting in Christ alone
to be our Righteous Substitute,
so that he regards (imputes) his righteousness
as though it is ours so that we have eternal life.
The just shall live by faith. (Romans 1:17)
Christ showed Luther by insight the meaning of that:
The just (declared righteous) live (receive eternal life) by faith
(Christ causes us to trust him to impute his righteousness ours).
(Preface to Luther's Latin Works)
After Christ has saved us
by imputing his righteousness to us,
he enables us to keep our trust on him alone
to forever be all our righteousness and victory:
I am the vine, ye are the branches:
He that abideth in me, and I in him,
the same bringeth forth much fruit:
for without me ye can do nothing.
(John 15:5)
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world:
and this is the victory that overcometh the world,
even our faith.
(1 John 5:4)
If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled,
and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel,
(Colossians 1:23)
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live;
yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:
and the life which I now live in the flesh
I live by the faith of the Son of God,
who loved me, and gave himself for me.
(Galatians 2:20)
