What gives? news.dallas.sbcglobal.net informs me
that they have dropped alt.binaries.freemasonry.
Is this a part of the crackdown on porn? If so,
why pick on the masons?

Probably... The alt.* heirarchy is about to be dropped by Google,
too. That's going to make it a PITA for me to read the group whilst
out here on tour.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: The Houston Area League of
PC Users Group (HAL-PC) has HAL-Net. HAL-Net offers Nation Wide
access numbers and virtually all news-groups at a very reasonable cost.

Here is a link: http://www.hal-pc.org/halnet.html

Pay for dial-up? Errrr, no.
(I haven't owned a modem in ten years...)

You don't pay for the dial-up. You pay for the access to the
newsgroups. My dsl provider is Consolidated.net. (I'm not served by
southwestern bell.) However my Newsreader is set to use news.hal-pc.org.

Yep more providers are dropping alt. groups because of "childporn".
It's something like abolishing streets because on some of them
people sell crack. It's weird but that is how the situation is now.
(and I am sure they are so happy with less traffic too, it will safe them a
bundle)

Thats just the excuse they are giving, a scapegoat if you will. The
reason is that Usenet has become a strain on hardware and bandwidth not
to mention takedown requests made by the MPAAfia and RIAAfia that are
simply too difficult to keep with and are useding up massive resources
(both hardware and human) and cater to a very small percentage of their
overall users.

The alt.binaries take LOT of space.

A lot of it, both the porn and the other groups have content that is in
breach of copyright and it pirated.

A lot of ISP's are getting rid of the binaries groups. They are not
needed so much these days as "everyone" has their own web space. This
has been discussed on the photographing groups for a while.

OK, so I think I've got it figured out. It's just
the alt.binaries, not all the alt groups.
So if someone has a group called
alt.naked.pictures, that's OK. But
alt.binaries.freemasonry or alt.binaries.57chevys
or alt.binaries.cake.recipes gets the ax. Makes
all the sense in the world.
