lately i've come across several curiously similar attacks on homosexuality
at sites such as [ http://www.leaderu.com/marco/special/spc15.html ]
[another can be found here: http://www.all.org/encyclopedia/plae119.htm ] .
while including the usual 'fire and brimstone' warnings, the articles also
contain quotes from one Eric M. Pollard. who the reader is told was the
founder of act-up/DC. the sites claim he was interviewed by the Washington
Blade in January 31, 1991(some have different dates). also the quotes by
Pollard taken from the article are totally incongruous to what you would
expect a founder of act-up to be saying, including:

"We conspired to bring into existence an activist group that... could
effectively exploit the media for its own ends, and that would work covertly
and break the law with impunity... Under the influence of powerful, illicit
drugs, it really seemed like a good idea"

and

"The average Gay man or woman could not immediately relate to our subversive
tactics, drawn largely from the voluminous Mein Kampf"

i have not been able to find a single reference to Eric M. Pollard in ANY
other publications or documents on the web (gay related or not) stating
that he had anything to do with the founding of any act-up chapters, or for
that matter any other sites which would support the statement that even
existed at all. i would tend to think that if a person in such standing in
the gay community were to make statements like the ones mentioned there
would be at least some scandal. what is going on here? was the story
totally fabricated and then circulated by idiot christian groups drooling
for that ever so valuable 'look they really ARE evil' editorial? does
anybody know who this person is or if indeed they existed at all?

I found a single reference by searching the Washington Blade web site. It
seems to confirm that he was involved with ACT UP.

(hey how'd you get that by they way? i searched WB's archives and found
nothing. huh. odd.)

well apparently he did indeed exist. now to find out what went on. how does
someone go from street demonstrations for better azt distribution to saying
he uses mein kampf to create a "fascist organization"? the instantaneous
conversion story the christian right wing groups would have its readers
believe doesn't agree with logic. so im very interested in knowing what
REALLY happened and how badly those quotes were taken out of context.

Same here, Vince. I checked out the two sites you posted and it struck me as
more of the same rabid homo-hate I;ve come to expect from the Christian right.
Over heavy on exposing the *true* gay agenda [is there a lesbian agenda, a
bisexual agenda, a transgenderist agenda?] that is being secretly promoted by
some group of elders of Sodom, I presume.

I suspect from reading Eric Pollard's quotes that he has been taken out of
context. I detect behind some of the quotes a certain over the top camposity and
in others there seems to be signs of rancour. I suspect that Washington ACT UP,
like ACT UP chapters all over the place, had some pretty turbulent internal
politics [1] and Pollard seems to have come off rather badly in some such
internal struggle.

But, I believe that the Christian right are not alert to such nuances or. if
they are, deliberately use them to distort the true picture. I mean one of the
sites still puts out that old saw of "we shall sodomise your sons" from years
ago. So what we're apparently out for is compulsory homosexuality starting off
with all these good Christian boys/men. I dunno, all these fundamentalists all
so sure that we are all after their arses

I mean, honeys, I do have *some* taste

Michael, wondering what it would be like to live in a compulsorily homosexual
world especially the retirement benefits for old activists :-)

Darling, Pythia, aren't you the Elect of Sodom?
I am, after all, the Tart of Darkness in whose twilight recesses, the Congo
flows.
