I didn't have high hopes for "In Search of a Midnight Kiss." I ordered
it via OnDemand this weekend only because it opened Friday at the IFC
Center in Manhattan and it was my only current option to watch a movie
playing in New York without leaving my living room.

"In Search of a Midnight Kiss" turned out to be more engrossing than
I'd anticipated. One reader response to Manohla Dargis' NY Times
review criticized "dialogue that rings flat" --

-- but I found the dialogue to be innovative, tightly written and some
of the most engrossing lines I've heard in a movie recently. (And no
snarky comments about "That's to be expected since most of the movies
you've seen recently have been from Helix Studios."

"In Search of a Midnight Kiss" has no motss content; all the romances
are heterosexual. The film's male lead, Scott McNairy, is consistenly
endearing throughout the film and gives off a vibe similar to
"Flipping Out"'s Ryan Brown (Jeff Lewis' ex), partly because it
appears Scoot and Ryan have found the same hairstylist. Sara Simmonds,
who plays the girl Scoot's character hooks up with via Craigslist,
alternates between being obnoxious, intriguing and endearing.

This movie has a bonus for fans of movie palaces. Wilson (Scoot) and
Vivian (Sara) stroll past several theater marquees during their walk
through Los Angeles' Broadway Theater District. Vivian expresses a
desire to see the interior of one of the theaters, and Wilson manages
to gain them entry to the Orpheum for a brief self-guided tour.

"In Search of a Midnight Kiss" is playing at the IFC Center in
Manhattan and available to some cable subscribers via IFC InTheaters
OnDemand. The film's display ad in Friday's New York Times indicates
it will have a wider release on August 8, which I'm guessing will
include theaters in Los Angeles and San Francisco (but not Augusta).

Why not just admit it. Ryan is the real star of "Flipping Out".
He's smarter, nicer, better looking and more talented as a designer
than that OCD mess, Jeff. Plus he's the hottest gay dad that's ever
been shown on tv. The show should be repurposed as a Ryan Brown
spinoff: "Keeping it Real".

I can not imagine Jeff Lewis having sex with Ryan* -- or _anybody_
(including himself). I do think the most entertaining episode of
"Flipping Out" would be if Jeff crossed the country to spend a weekend
at a certain resort in Augusta. Not that the resort isn't well
maintained -- but if you want 600 thread count sheets, color
coordinated duvets and down pillows, you might be happier at the
Marriott Riverwalk ... or heading west on I-20 to a hotel in Buckhead.

*Not that I spend a lot of time thinking about Jeff and Ryan having
sex ... or Ryan having sex ... or Lance Bass having sex ... or George
Michael ... no, wait, sometimes I do think about George Michael having
sex.
