Noteworthy -- Dennis Cole
Dennis Lewis
Florida, died Sunday in a Fort Lauderdale hospital. He was 69.
Cole's breakout role was as the rookie detective in "Felony Squad,"
which aired on ABC from 1966 through 1969. Cole also had roles in the
daytime soaps "Paradise Bay" and "The Young and the Restless."
Cole's only son, Joey, was killed during a robbery in 1991. That
prompted Cole to begin speaking out against violence on TV and
rejecting parts in violent programs.
The L.A. Times notes that Cole worked as a stuntman while trying to
get started in acting. But he was also one of the well-built aspiring
young actors who modeled for the physique magazines that were
primarily read by gay men. In fact, a copy of "Young Adonis" from 1963
that I bought on eBay has a six-page photospread of a young pre-fame
Cole. (I chastized myself for overbidding at the time, though I'm glad
to have it in my collection now.)

The B&W photos of Dennis in the posing strap are from the 1963 issue
of "Young Adonis." As some may have noticed, I refrained from titling
this thread "Dennis Cole Dies At 69." All sources agree that Cole was
born in 1940, yet he's identified as a 20-year-old in "Young Adonis"'s
1963 photo spread. The photos could have been snapped in 1960, tagged
"Dennis Cole - age 20" and placed on a photographer's shelf for three
years. Or ... 23 was considered so ancient by 1960s standards that
either the magazine editors, or Cole himself, tried to shave three
years off his age.
