+At the Lumiere Theatre (California and Polk in SF) a movie about the life
+and times of Carmen Miranda is playing. Besides the gay male interest in
+her life (she was the woman with the fruity hats who sang and danced
+pseudo-Brazilian dances in Busby Berkeley movies in the 1930s and 40s),
+there is also something of note: there is a male Carmen Miranda
+impressionist who does scenes in the movie to fill in the parts where they
+don't have footage of her. Interesting movie, I must say.
It's called "Bananas Is My Business" and I saw it last summer when it
premiered in the Boston area. The director and her husband, the producer,
showed up as part of a benefit night and were to answer questions from
the audience after the film showed. When the lights came up after the
credits, they were nowhere to be seen!
I saw it in the Coolidge Corner Theatre in heavily Jewish Brookline.
When it became apparent the audience had been stiffed by the auteurs,
an old woman sitting next to me said "I bet they walked out because
we're Jewish!" Not likely, as the director and her husband were themselves
Jewish.

Hardly pseudo-Brazilian. She WAS Brazilian (Argentine?), and had a huge
career in Latin America before being discovered and brought to the US.
In fact, Hollywood types demanded she "tone down" the native dances,
lyrics, and rhythms in order to "fit with the maisntream" better. This
is clearly talked about in the movie, which also ran on PBS back in
November (I believe).
But then, what do I know...I'm trying to get HIV and hepatitis A.

Yep, I remember Matt and I stumbling onto it quite by accident and
enjoying it.
IMO, it was sad that in the end, Carmen couldn't break away from the
typecasting in the US, and was reviled in some parts of Brazilian society
for "Selling out to the Americans". I quite enjoy her stuff, but then
again, I *am* gay...

David, I remember it quite clearly. It was a real low point, even by the

David, you silly puppy. You *REPEATEDLY* accused Tim of WANTING to get

Yes, I was wrong. It was easy to think that Tim got Hepatitis from
rimming, since he hadn't mentioned anything about food poisoning until I
brought up the dangers of rimming. And I'll continue to say it today:
rimming is dangerous; you can get hepatitis from it.
Self-destruction: I see people who get into one destructive relationship
after another and just don't get it. This is the city where people join a
group called "Negatives Being Positive", made up of people who feel left
out because they don't have AIDS.
I've seen all kinds of self-destruction -- people who drink all night and
get beaten up in the park because they were too drunk to realize who they
were cruising. I've seen people who have colostony bags due to being
fisted while on drugs going overboard. I've seen people who will inhale
anything as long as it gets them high, could be butyl or could be lighter
fluid, they probably don't know or care.
I've seen a guy rimming a guy immediately after he took a shit. And I'm
to think Tim Evanson is any different? Remember, he didn't say anything
about his food poisoning until AFTER I had chastised him for rimming.

That's an interesting definition of "Tim." I thought it was a just a common

David, Tim said absolutely nothing at all about rimming, or even sex, in

GIven my continued enjoyment of rimming as part of my sexual life, I
hesitate to call you an asshole. You sound exactly like the xian fundies

their tongue up someone's butt.
I can't believe that instead of pronoucing rimming a dirty act, you
haven't been encouraging gay men to get hepatitis A and B vaccines. Since
you won't I will: Everybody, go get vaccinnated! It will be one of the
best things you've ever done for your health.
Hepatitis B, by the way, is transferred through sexual acts other than
rimming, and is far, far more communicable than HIV.

Ain't that the truth. Actually, I saw someone at the
Media & Democracy Congress the other night (BTW, the Left
really is in disarray :-() that I was *sure* must be DAK,
but I was afraid to ask (in case I was right). That's
only happened with me once before with motss.people (before
the advent of gifs anyway), when I decided correctly that
the shaved-headed, tattooed, pierced person in the "Jesus
Shaves" t-shirt at the MOW93 meeting could only be Jeff
Dauber.
The very first motss.person I met was Steve Dyer -- back in
1985 or so -- and he didn't look at all like the Mr. Rogers
and McLean Stevenson's love-child I was expecting...

There is no "you" here. There is an "us". *We* are
having *our* annual event, in Chicago, in late May. If you're
so moved to place *us* as "you assholes", then why don't you
go post to *your* group - wherever that may be - and let "us
assholes" get along with *our* lives, in much the way that we
happily did before anyone had ever HEARD of D*v*d K*y* (does
"y" count as a vowel? --- OK make that D*v*d K*?* just to be
sure).

Oh please - don't put yourself out. Dragging that

it's hard enough getting it around on public transportation
since you think that moving a bus route one block constitutes
cutting off all bus access to the glorious Castro (or something
to that effect).

Wonderful - now we know that we'll never have to
worry about everyone being SO bored and depressed after
meeting you face-to-face that there's a mass suicide of
motss-folk a la Jamestown.
Here's an idea - why don't you go off to alt.politics.libertarian or
something - you know like a
loony exchange program! I hear they're one short of a
full set of loonies, and I'd hate to think that we were
hoarding something as VALUABLE a resource as *THE ORACLE OF
THE CASTRO* from the rest of the USENET universe!
Make the circuit - show the rest of USENET that
soc.motss isn't free from it's own resident loonies!
Share the wealth! Fly! Fly! Fly!
Or, if you choose to stay - at least *contribute*
something.

" Is this group encouraging suicide through sex? If not, what does this have
" to do with the group?
All I can say is what I experienced at one of their gatherings. People
generally seemed to feel they with they'd gotten AIDS so that they
wouldn't feel left out.
There's something else, too, though. People with AIDS seem to get a lot
more attention here because there are so many support groups set up for
them, so many charity fundraisers for them, etc. So, while I think it's
a *very* unhealthy thing for a group like Negatives Being Positive to
exist, I can sort of see why some people feel upset about being ignored
in the gay community (such as it is).

I still feel this way; and I am not alone. It is also a major reason why
the Quilt's founder, Cleve Jones, left the group. The Quilt never ends.
There won't be a time when the Quilt can be put away as finished. It's
made up of panels of grief. People cry when they see it. They feel bad
afterwards. Crying is not necessarily a healing function; often it simply
opens old wounds and actually slows the healing process. I think I know a
little something about this, having lost many friends to AIDS. There are
a couple panels I see that cause the grief to come back -- 10 years later.
At one time I owned a business accross from the Quilt's headquarters. It
got so bad that I couldn't even walk on that side of the street.
Yes, I do believe that people (in order to be healthy, that is) must move
on, rather than dwell on the past.

Because they're different from you. So deal. Not everyone is as good at
coping as you seem to think you are. Maybe they're people without a wide
circle of gay friends, and they need to go to a place declared as grieving-
safe or whatever so they can commiserate with people without going to a
bar and having a crying drunk. Not everyone is just like you, or has the
same life experiences as you. Accept that, and let people do what they
need to.

I don't believe you got the point. If these people shouldn't dwell on their
friends' deaths, why do you get to do so?

This makes as much sense as telling someone who is clinically depressed to
"just cheer up."
I suggest you do some reading, in particular Walt Odet's book "Life in the
Shadows: Being HIV Negative in the Age of AIDS."
Admitting that one has a problem and taking steps to deal with it is not a
sign of victim envy. And given the increased rates of HIV transmission
among young gay men, I would suggest you shut up, get on with your life,
and leave the issue to those of us trying to do something about it.
BTW, you may want to stop implying in your posts that rimming is a major
vector for HIV disease. For those worried about hepatitis A and B, get
vaccinated, or stop eating shellfish and butt, or use a dental damn.
