hunting down there, but hopefully a bug bomb will prevent me from ever

Rattlers big and little are quite common all over the Midwest,
though I've only met one up close while backcountry hiking in
Utah's Canyonlands National Park.

After an arduous daylong hike over very tough terrain, my
straightboy camping partner was preparing our dinner while I
went off to sit on a nearby rocky ledge, write in my journal and
be pissed off that he had brought every spice on the planet but
forgotten the rain fly for our tent, which was on his list.
Imagine the sound of a small stone tipping over. As I wrote I
heard a tiny "kush", turned toward the sound and saw a large
rattler moseying along steadily about six feet from my hinder,
which was blocking its path along the ledge. I yielded the
right of way with considerable alacrity, you may be sure.

Oh irony: Ellen just before definitively rebutted your whole
argument.
Whether you approve or not [1], those phrases are standard
speech and arguably clearer than the alternatives you propose,
"HI virus" suggesting an cascade of "hellos" or "PI number"
perhaps referring to a Tom Selleck episode.
[1] "Whether or not" is similarly redundant, since "whether"
implies "or not". Nevertheless, it's what many, many
people say, sniffy protests of the class-conscious
notwithstanding.
