It's pretty standard knowledge, and indeed the classical Latin name
for "Irish" was "Scoti". To be precise, they were one of the people
that, in early Christian times, were the population what is now modern
Scotland. J. D. Mackie, _A History of Scotland_ (Penguin Books, 1978)
lists them as the Picts, Scots, Britons, and Angles. The Norse and
Normans came later. The Scots ended up in a lot of Scotland, and when
their king Kenneth MacAlpin got the Pictish throne in 843, they got
