In my case, opportunity. I grew up in a very sheltered environment
in rural South Alabama. For most of my life, I wouldn't known a gay
man if he had come up and pinched my butt ( well, maybe that would've
given it away :-). Even after I figured out I was gay, I didn't
know where to go to meet people or how to spot them. But, when
I did figure that one out, :-) :-) Actually, I'm still not that
good at picking folks out; where do I go to buy my gaydar?

Ah, first kiss. I fell in love at sweet 16 with a girl on my softball
team. She taught me many things, among them how to smoke cigarettes,
drink beer, and kiss ("El, open your mouth!") - my kissing before that
had been limited to short sessions in the coat closets at barmitzvah
parties with boys who gave me good reasons to keep my mouth shut (slobber,
braces...). Charlotte, however, was on a faster track and had already
had a few years of practice kissing girls in junior high.

There's really little that compares with a great kisser - all else
seems to evolve from that skill!

I had enjoyed kissing women for more than two decades before I kissed
my first man. At the time I was coming out I revulsed at the thought
of kissing another man. Years of cultural "programming" had done a
job on me. Fortunately my partner was understanding and patient with
me.

I remember the first tentative pecks on the cheek... And then kissing
on the lips... It was only minutes from kissing a man on the lips for
the first time that I threw caution to the winds and indulged in
tongue play... After that experience I couldn't seem to get enough.

And I remember the look on my partner's face when I first kissed him on
the lips... I asked "What's the matter?" and he said "You kissed me!"
to which I nonchalantly replied "So what!" And we proceeded to make up
for "lost time"...

Today I have no problems kissing either a man or a woman, I just
prefer a man.
