several days of wind, rain and fog. At one point last night I looked
out my bedroom window looking south, and the sky was orangish, like
massive sodium vapor coloration. It was foggy out (I love fog --
from up here on the bluff on the 5th floor, I'm above everything and
it's very peaceful), and looking at the city, the cloud ceiling was
extremely low. It's not at all uncommon for the top of the Empire
State Building to be shrouded, but last night nearly all the
buildings had their tops shrouded, starting around the 20th or 30th
floor.
I don't quite know where the orange glow was coming from, but it was
generally in the direction of the New Jersey Turnpike and
Philadelphia. I don't know why it was so uncharacteristically
orange, but I guess the moisture content of the air was high enough
to be very reflective, but not so dense as to block the light
entirely.
So, that's my post for the day.
Talking about the weather.

my *Dracaena fragrans massengeana* has three growing stalks. At the
moment (it gets hacked back regularly) it's about as tall as me. Ten
days ago, I was watering all the plants and was pleasantly surprised
to see that all three of them had flower buds growing. There seems to
be no season for this, sometimes it's 6mo between flowers, more likely
it's 2.5 - 3.5yrs. And I've never had all three bloom at the same
time, so this is really nifty.
The flowering shoots have been growing over the last few days, and
last night they started to bloom. There are several blossom heads on
a shoot, and each blossom, like a dandelion head(*) has about 100
florets on it. About 10-15% of the florets opened last evening --
they open about six, and stay open until after midnight. There's a
lovely fragrance that goes with it (hence dracaena *fragrans*, I
spoze).
(*)or like a chive or onion bloom. When you see the blossoms, you
realise that dracaenae are DEFinitely of the lily family.
I've got four or five more evenings of blossoming. I'm so pleased.
Makes up for the finally-retreating H1N1, lemme tellya.

My first thought was that you were using "receipt" in the British
sense of (U.S.) "recipe", but no, it seems you really were busy with

Thanks for the subtle Mac promo; that site also has a page for an PC
version.
I have a friend who'd just go gaga over this thing. He's into devices
that take data from records and transfer it into the correct fields of
other software programs. He'd get a bigger thrill out of this "Neat"
scanner than from Sam or Dan pressing their butts against his face. (I
know; weird, huh?)
But what's this deal about having to buy it while you're changing
planes? In the past, I'd have said "Hooray! An excuse to fly to
Washington," but considering the state of air travel today I'd rather
drive I-77 through Charlotte ... at 5 p.m. on a Friday ... during a
snowstorm than take a flight.
And the Webmaster for this company devoted to foolproof record storage
is a little loose when it comes to "Ronald Reagan National Washington
Int'l Airport." Not only does it grate me whenever I see the "Ronald
Reagan" part because, after all, National Airport was *already* named
after a president -- George Washington, *hello*? But also, it's not
"International" -- is it? Air Canada may have slipped in a flight from
DCA to Toronto I haven't heard about, but I'm fairly certain the
length of National's runways prevent it from handling any other
international route.

wouldn't it just? I'm not sure I could trust it not to water the

Besides the usual Canadian suspects, there is also a DCA-NAS (Nassau,
Bahamas) round trip (US Air), although apparently, like at the major
Canadian airports, US Customs and Border Protection conducts border
preclearance at NAS so there should be no need for immigration
processing at DCA.

Smaller US airports elect to add the "International" designation if they
have any sort of US Customs processing there. In some cases, IIRC, that
may only involve occasional international (often == "Canadian") freight
processing, like when they get a customs inspector to show up from some
larger facility to inspect the monthly small plane-load of maple syrup
and Nanaimo bars. Even the Little Town is served by an "International
Airport" (OK, they have had scheduled direct and/or non-stop commuter
flights to/from Toronto in the past.)

month-old Nanaimo bars? scandal! (though, actually, they [Nature's
Most Nearly Perfect Food (sweet division)] do freeze very
successfully.

I have actually flown from YYZ to ABE on the one flight that made it
"International". It is actually (or was, not sure if it still
operates) a three-cornered flight: Pearson Toronto / Harrisburg /
ABE. When I took it, it was a 19-seater prop-job, with the centre
aisle was slightly lower than the decking with the seats attached; and
the cross-beams made obvious with yellow/black stripy hazard tape.
The door was hinged from the bottom, so when it was opened and swung
down, the stairs were actually mounted on the inside of the door
panel.
As we were taxiing, a voice comes over the tannoy with the usual
safety stuff, "and if you have any further questions, don't hesitate
to ask". Wait a minnit, I thought, you're the *co-pilot*. I'm not
going to bother you with trivial questions about washrooms or free
pretzels - you've got important work to do, in actually flying the
plane!
But we got into / out of ABE just fine. Internationally, that is.
(and since we'd cleared US customs at YYZ before we actually
physically left Canada, we never DID see a US customs agent in
allentown/bethlehem/easton.)
