Number of ETO soliders in the Pacific ?
Did any ETO troops see action in the Pacific between May-August 1945? I know there was mobilization to move the troops to the Pacific for the impending invasion of Japan but am not sure how far along it got. Thx - Craig

Second Battle of El Alamein
Considering the resources at hand for Rommel and the Africa Korps (not having the resources to advance and capture the Suez Canal nor being able to withdraw) other than the morale/propaganda value of fighting/winning such a battle, what was the reason for having the battle? In my view, Rommel could have been... more »

Soviet radar?
In a recent thread the subject of German air attacks on the USSR came up. As noted elsewhere this is an obscure area for westerners. One question occurred to me. The Germans made some raids on Soviet cities, especially Moscow, in 1941-42 (and perhaps later). Once source I have mentions British air raid protection experts going to the USSR... more »

Norden - Thermite Bullet - Jeff Shaara Novel?
I realize that this question comes from a work of fiction, but Jeff Shaara usually sticks pretty close to the real world for the settings of his war novels. I took a quick glance at "No Less Than Victory" in the bookstore. About p. 15, he's relating the experiences of a B-17 bombardier. He mentions a small pistol loaded with a 'thermite... more »

U.S. soldier hand signals
Hello, Does anyone know of a site that could explain the hand signals used by U.S. soldiers during combat? Also, were these signals part of basic training or just something developed in battle? Thanks for any info, Jim

WI: Germans take Astrakhan in late 1942...
Lets say the Germans isolate Stalingrad, cross the Volga and reach Astrakhan in mid-October 1942 and were able to hold it. This scenario implies the Caucasus was cut off from the main portion of Russia and hence its main Oil supply route. Two questions: 1. Was there a Soviet Navy in the Caspian Sea that could have established a... more »

RAF bombing of Germany after 1943
In 1943, there were major concerns by many in Britain over the emphasis on bombing cities and not military targets. If say after 1943, Bomber Harris would have been replaced as I doubt he would have changed the targeting now say the RAF targets was set to a more military and economic targeting would it have made much difference to the... more »

Value of Stalingrad
I understand the political value of capturing Stalingrad, but once it became evident that it was a meat grinder, why not withdraw and pound it with long rand artillery or bombers? For that matter, why didn't the Soviets allow the Germans to capture Stalingrad and then pound the Germans. It's not... more »

Von Paulus disobeys an order
What are the effects if Von Paulus disobeys orders and withdraws as many troops as he can from Stalingrad? I'd imagine a public execution for him. But if a significant portion of the troops successfully withdraw how does that affect future battles.
