Noob Question about ENIGMA
Hi, a question about code-breaking in WWII: Correct me If I'm wrong, but basically it worked like that: German radio traffic was encrypted wit ENIGMA machines and settings that were changed daily. In Bletchley Park, they had a nifty machine (or many) that could go trough all possible settings (usually within a few hours), so it... more »

Norden Bombsight
Did the USA share it with any other allies? If not, what were the Allies using in its place? Craig

Gestapo Documentary
I tuned in to part of a documentary "Gestapo" and heard something surprising (to me). The documentary asserted that the Gestapo was in charge of drafting foreign workers/slave laborers and controlling them in Germany. This seems a bit far afield from a political secret police, but one never knows in Nazi Germany. Was this information... more »

WWII in HD
I've been watching this program on the History channel and I must say that after seeing thousand of hours of documentaries on WWII for the last 55 years or so I am watching film of combat events that I've never seen before. Where did they get all this new film? I would say about 90% is never-before seen film, at least none that I've ever seen... more »

Japan's Emperor Marks 20th Year - Inouye
(one newsgroup deleted, one added) ...IMHO, there is an interesting second part to that story. (From "Desperate Siege, The Battle of Hong Kong" by Ted Ferguson, 1980) "On the morning of April 22, 1947, (IJA) Sgt. Inouye Kanao faced the bench in a Hong Kong courtroom to hear Chief Justice Sir Henry Blackall pronounce sentence.... more »

Air war on the Eastern Front: good overview sources?
I'm looking for a book recommendation. I think I would like to learn something about the air war on the Eastern Front. It's not a subject that gets much play, even from Eastern Front specialists - the ground battles are the usual focus, especially the tanks. What I'd like to get, if possible, is a narrative... more »

Scenario for England if the Dunkirk evacuation had failed?
If the 400k or so troops were not evacuated, how would it have effected England's ability to wage war? How many troops were left in England? Would they have been able to participate in strength in the North Africa campaign? Craig

French bases under German Admin.
Hello all I am interested in reading about how French military installations made the transition to German administration in 1940 and back again in 44 and 45 I'm ashamed to say I don't know the names of any large bases in France. Books that I've read always mention 'ports and airfields' that fell into... more »

8th Air Force vs. Lufthansa?
Did 8th Air Force fighter pilots specifically target Lufthansa aircraft if they ran across them? Was there the equivalent of unrestricted warfare as there was against shippng? Did Lufthansa or other German airlines even maintain scheduled routes during the war?

Marching, (Infantry speed).
While watching a TV show (World at War) on the Battle of Belgium- France, was a claim the German army advanced 30 miles per day, which was 3x faster than expected, and was (in part) a decisive factor in the victory, as it caught the French off guard, because they moved too slow. Here's a bit of a link,... more »
