Does anyone know, or have ability to reasonably determine,
the exact route that after the night of 28 June 1778,
Clinton's army took to get from the Battlefield at Monmouth
New Jersey, to the safety of Sandy Hook?

(Sandy Hook is the spit where the Royal Navy could protect them
while awaiting short distance ship transport to New York.)

They left Monmouth Courthouse on what was then (probably)
known as Middletown & Shrewsbury road.

"by dawn nex day Clinton and Cornwallis had joined Knyphausen
at Nut Swamp, 13 miles away. Around 10:00AM the entire
force moved on to Middletown."

Names have changed, but that reference to "Nut Swamp"
seems to indicate they went to the north of the inlet
by what is now the town of Red Bank.
And, probably north of the 'arrowhead shaped pointing east'
water now known as Swimming River reservoir.

My, so far, best cite "Monmouth Courthouse 1778 The last
great battle in the north" by Brendan Morrissey,
Campaign Osprey Publishing also says,
"Beyond Freehold, the road system has changed somewhat,
and it is not possible to follow Clinton's and Knyphausen's
routes exactly."
