Hi Folks,

Just stopped by for a few questions, hope nobody minds.

The above show has been run recently on The Military Channel. Can
anybody tell me who sings the closing song, "Johnny Has Gone for a
Soldier"?

I realize through some Googling that the song is very old, and goes by
other names as well, (Buttermilk Hill, Butternut Hill, Shule Aroon,
Shule Agru, sp?), and that a few people have covered it before.

James Taylor in the Liberty! series, as well as Solas, and even Peter,
Paul, and Mary, but can anybody either check the DVD/video tape, or
the program credits, and tell me who sang it for the show, please?

Real TV, Inc," so you may want to try to contact one of them.

(seems pretty pricy to me!
I'd look around at thrift stores etc.)

Or, if you have one, set your DVR (or whatever)
to record it off the air next time it plays
(seems likely = around 4th of July).

Or, check out your local library.

Meanwhile, just a warning, the Charles Kuralt one
is pretty good, another one is not, and they sometimes
get confused.

In the unlikely event that you still use this account, I must ask if you know where I may purchase a DVD version of the Revolutionary War narrated by Charles Kuralt. This series has been impossible to find thus far. Any help you may offer would be greatly appreciated.

It gets played at least 3 times a year on TV
Often on military & history channels
(and definitely one timeit is played is 3rd or 4th of July).
So you could watch for next playing & record it.

To anyone still looking for a copy of this song, I have made some progress. However it may not be the news you are looking for. I emailed Carol Fleisher, the director of this series, hoping she could give me some detailed information about the rendition of the song. Below was her reply.

Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry, but I believe the only extant version of Johnny’s Gone for a Soldier (by Christine Ebersole) is in the series itself. I know I don’t have a copy. Unfortunately, the composer who did that arrangement has passed away….
