The White Cockade?

I have been searching for a Scottish Jacobite song called the "White
Cockade". I have found at least six versions of it on the internet. I am
confused as to which one was played during the American revolution. Does
anyone know if the version played by British fifer Luther Blanchard at
Concord has been jotted down by any spectators and published??

Regarding the "White Cockade," Robert Burns wrote verses to a song he
called "John Hielandman," a soldier and a love of the woman who sings the
song. John dies (of course). The tune is "The White Cockade." Pete Brady

In an auld house in the North of England [North East] next to an estate
or project as they say in the US there was a Star and Bar on the old
wrecked Gate House and a local teacher said the Washingtons lived at that
place once upon a time - was he joshin me or is that were your national
linen got it's design from? Seeing how he was college educated I was
tempted to take his word for it but with him being English and all there
might be reasonable grounds to suspect some habitual distortion of the
facts charming though they are when they're lying which is most nearly
always.

The design was a shield [as you'd expect] with one star and one bar.

About the red flag, I have found several songs set to or called
the white cockade. Is this the one that starts with "Our people's flag
is deepest red, it shrouded oft our martyred dead . .." or the like? I
wish they hadn't changed it to tannenbaum. I wonder why they did.

I have a version that the group I play with claims to be the actual version played. I too had found 3 different versions and another group I played with was playing the MCV version which seems to be most common played among groups. I asked why the new group I joined played a slightly different version and the answer was this version was the actual version played and supposively written down by the fifer who played it before he died. I don't know if there is evidence to back it up but that is what I've been told. Could be a legend but I like it better.
