To all members, I find that I must apologize for an error on
the main Gallery page. The email address to which picture
need to be sent for the Gallery has been changed and the
change never made it to to page.

*sigh*

Please resend any picture that have been sent within the last
few months to pics [.] shm {@} shm-qa [.] net. (Removing
spaces and brackets, of course. *G*)

Again, my most sincere apologies for any inconvenience this
has almost certainly caused.

Not sure if I'm screwing this up, but twice I sent a photo to the
address you listed here and it came back. I tried sending it without
the "pic" part, and though it didn't come back, I've no clue as to
whether or not you got it. Please let me know (BTW, I can't do it
through the automatic send that you have listed on the web page as my
computer won't allow it).

Thanks!

I lost my news feed recently so have no idea what you are talking
about. If it is pictures of posters I do not own a scanner or a
digital camera, and am unlikely to buy either.

Thank you Drew. That was exactly the information
I needed. There was a typo. pics is supposed to
go into a specific box under subs. Unfortunately
subs was mistyped as "subs." instead of "subs_"
so, of course, anything being sent to pics was
bouncing into the stratosphere.

The problem HAS been corrected, and the addy
should be working properly by 9:55 am PST today.

Also, one request. Please have all pics in .jpeg,
.bmp or .gif format. I have received the one
you forwarded to me, Drew. Once I have converted
it from .tif to one of the above formats I will see
that it gets up on the site.

Eve, you picture DID, happily, make it through.

Martin, any special request as to which of the
three pictures you sent gets used?

Still trying to get the coder to write a script
that will let people put their pictures directly
in the site directory ready to be added.
Unfortunately, she has a paying project that she
is under the gun for right now, so we have to
wait on that. *sigh* Oh, well.

Anyway, the pics addy SHOULD now work.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I am still confused.
Should I send my picture to

subs_p...@shm-qa.net. Or what?

Wolf, it would be helpful if you could repost the full

That's ok. A lot of people seem to feel that
way after they've been around me a while.

> Should I send my picture to

> subs_p...@shm-qa.net. Or what?

pics are sent to: pics [dot] shm [at] shm-qa [dot] net

Just pull the spaces and change bracketed items to
appropriate symbols.

subs [underscore] shm [at] shm-qa [dot] net
is a generic address. Pics, biblio, links,
monograph, review and add.qa are all
subsidiaries.

> Wolf, it would be helpful if you could repost
> the full address.

OK. What it boils down to is if you have pics
to go on the site, you send it to:

pics [dot] shm [at] shm-qa [dot] net

If you have a book or magazine review you
wish to submit, change pics to review.

For Bibliography additions, you change pics
to biblio and submit them that way.

Monographs gets pics changed to monograph,
new links for the links page gets pics
changed to links and for new questions or
answers it would be ad.qa.

Of course, for any of the above, except pics,
you can just use the appropriate form if you
wish.

No problem

Great!

I hate to be picky though, I did have a couple problems.

I sent two pictures and the one you have up is not at the Tower of
London even though that's how it's listed. It's in front of a cafe in
Evanston, Illinois and is significant because it was actually taken by
another member of SHM (tempted as I was to put up a picture of myself
at age 19, I did refrain)! The picture which was not used was taken
at the Tower. You'll have to change the picture or change the title
if you wish to maintain accuracy. If I had my druthers, I think I'd
go for changing the picture, but whatever is easier for you.

Also, I could enlarge Grethe's picture, but none of the pictures after
that. I don't know if that's my problem or one that we all have.

Thanks, nevertheless! Your extra work is appreciated. It was fun to
see what others look like!

Done. There was confusion over which pic was which, even though it was
clearly marked. It has been corrected.

The links to the larger pictures of you, Martin and Soren were pointed to
the wrong directory. It has been corrected.

Doesn't everyone look grand!?!

I always find it fascinating when I am able to put a face to a name and
then realizing how completely off in left field I was when trying to do so.

It's even wilder when you meet net friends in the flesh. I've done
that many times. Sometimes they are like nothing you'd expect, other
times it's as if there was never a screen between you. So how did you
fare in your predictions this time?

Photos, of course, can be highly misleading. I tried for "serious,
but friendly". It would have been a completely different impression
had I sent that photo of myself as a punk rocker. Ah, the power of
visual manipulation! ;-)

>

Actually, I'd like to see a picture of David Read's brother, who he
once claimed looks like Jude Law. But, that's off topic...;-)

There are a lot of pictures of other members of SHM floating around
the net. Paul has a bunch of folks on his web site, Sophia has one on
hers, I think we saw one of Renia once. David D. had a very nice one
in full reenactment regalia. Wasn't there a self portrait of Tiglath
somewhere?

It would be great if they could all be centralized, but I don't know
if everyone is interested in being part of the "line up". Lord only
knows how many folks are already busy putting horns on our heads and
giving us mustaches (for those of us who don't already have them) in
Photoshop! ;-)

Bryn is magnificently displayed on his auld website - well worth a look for much
more than just to see him him kilted up!

Art Kramer is shown several times on his excellent website (looking vaguely
reminiscent of Mulder from the X Files in one shot I thought, but it was a while
ago)

Seppo the Clown and DSH we have all now seen I presume, and a Google Image
search of "Inger Johannsen" reveals several hilarious possibilities which rather
match the image I have of her in my mind... take your pick!

Matt Giwer (an occasional and truly noxious visitor) is well known too, a bit
like J Edgsr Hoover in a prison suit though not as handsome, but I have yet to
see Tiglath (rather like Raul Julia as Gomez I imagine, c/w sword), Alex, Alan
(Surreyman), David Read or Capt. Wolf.

Then there is Tobie....

I don't know about Fred... somehow I'd rather leave it to my imagination, as it
would probably spoil my image of him if I really saw what he looked liked? Hippo
too, I hope he's the strapping great hearty fellow I fondly imagine, but he may

Charmed, I'm sure.

But it's true, the faces you imagine which belong to posters or

words alone which convey a person's image and why they're faces so often
turn out to look so different.

Thay don't always. Paul was rather like I imagined, though i thought Michael
would be a rather terse, tetchy chap with horn-rimmed glasses and leather elbow
patches... about as far from reality as possible! Seppo wasn't far off though,
that snarl... nor Eve, Grethe, Sophia, Tron, Drew, Brian or Laura. Giwer was a
hilarious surprise, Hines just about what I'd imagined. From what I hear, Inger
too....

Where did you see tiggers and Tobie though? Now I am fascinated! And Dallas
Patterson, he must look like one of JR Ewing's buddies!

I don't see why not? One's physical appearance is plain for all to see, and not
a matter of copyright. If such a picture were to exist, then why not? The
irritating little sod will no doubt whine and whinge, but has no right to
'privacy' just because he's and ugly, snarling, balding dwarf... it is a matter
of historical record!

Just got it. Hmmm. 3 pictures.

Picture number one, choose one...

a. Whoa!, Your brother DOES look like Jude Law!
b. This is a picture of Jude Law off camera being casual.
c. Your brother IS Jude Law (in which case, I'll send you the picture
from when I was nineteen, um, I mean a more recent picture, and you
should forget about that old broad on the website. That's my mother!
;-)

Picture two--Is this a picture of your brother?

a. False C'mon, this is a picture of Jude Law that you pulled off the
net
b. True. Damn, your brother look like Jude Law. Umm, is that his
wife or girlfriend?

Picture three (not clear from label) choose one

a. Is your brother, doesn't look like Jude Law, but is VERY good
looking.
b. Is Jude Law's brother.
c. Is you! And you better put it up on the web site pronto!

Please answer correctly or you will force me to go through all the
Jude Law web sites to see if you stole their pictures and what an
awful job that would be!

BTW, got any relatives that look like Johnny Depp?

S'truth! Venus on the half shell.

And SUCH a contrast to Cook's quite thick, stumpy neck:

http://www.castles-abbeys.co.uk/Santlache-Jack-Russells.html

Michael W. [Pogue] Cook has long refused to display or permit the
display of ANY portrait picture of himself.

Curiouser and Curiouser....

Pogue Cook has, however, posted this purportedly shy-pogue "back view"
of himself on his own site -- which seems to show off his arse, his jug
ears and his thick, stumpy, peasant's neck to good purpose [so he
supposedly surmises].

http://www.castles-abbeys.co.uk/Santlache-Jack-Russells.html

Well, I suppose Pogue Cook considers those to be his BEST features --
his arse, his jug ears and his thick, stumpy, peasant's neck -- and he's
advertising.

Hilarious!

The dogs are quite cute, adorable, clean, well scrubbed, carefully
groomed and good-looking.

Pogue Cook no doubt suffers considerably by comparison...and realizes
it.

It just doesn't get any better than this, Virginia.

Outclassed by his own dogs....

How Sweet It Is!

'Nuff Said.

That was a while ago. I've put on a little weight since but I can still
see the top third when I look down in the morning. It's getting a bit hard
to reach the top notes when I play Voodoo Chile with my strat, but I intend
to cut down to three BigMacs for breakfast. My beard is a bit longer but
thinner. Labour Party green is still my favorite color. My favorite
shampoo is "Shoulders," and as you can see my clothes are fashioned in
Italy.

I believe that two thousand words are better than a picture, but I felt that
the warmth I radiate through my eyes and my overall sex appeal are aesthetic
pleasures I no longer should keep from others, despite my mistress'
protests.

But some men can't take it. For instance, after seeing me, Mr. Hines sent
me a note boasting:

"I have a huge rod"

But having been in his house I know that he in fact meant: I have a huge
rod-ent problem.

Someone in Italy owns tiglath.com. I tried to buy it from them but they
didn't answer. Among other things they peddle a singles dating service for
Assyrians. That's your chance to get to know a Senacherib.

He who could not get tiglath.com and tiglath.net got tiglath.org, which was
still available when I registered my domain.

I am in love with the Hittites at the moment. I visited their old capital
last summer. It is a wild place, from fittingly enough their chief god, the
Storm God, ruled in the Heroic Age. They have fantastic names.
Particularly I like a character called Pijamaradus, pronounced
"piah-mah-rah-douche," a powerful dispossessed royal adventurer that
terrorized western Anatolia in collusion with the Mycenaeans.

Tiggy, are you in lover mode or political mode? They mostly
don't mix.

As for Iran, it won't be like Iraq. If we had an army
to invade with (which we don't) we'd run into real
resistance from the entire population.

These are not Arabs. They are a unified people and have been
for a long long time. They gave the Roman Empire hell, drove
the Byzantines nuts, and had fun with their Arab invaders when
Islam came in.

There once was a nascent reform movement dedicated to the
establishment of a western-style democracy, but Bush killed
it by putting them on the "Axis of Evil" list.

That had the effect of uniting the rebellious young with
the religious leaders to defend their nation. So the
idiot got some newspaper space at the cost of making a
very bad enemy.

I expect that Tiggy knows all this.

There are only two options here. Either Bush wanted what's happening, to
enrich those involved in the war, "reconstruction", military glory, etc., in
which case it is nothing but treason, or he and his team really are THAT
incompetent. Either way we are fucked for four more years, because Bush
really believes now that he is Master of the Universe. This man, who calls
himself a man of peace, has caused the death and terrible destruction to
countless thousands of civilians. The op-ed section of the NYT of the last
few days, had excellent columns with descriptions of what is happening an
what lies ahead.

At the White House loyalty trumps competence. The voices of reason are
shoved out and the incompetent get promoted. Much as Rice has a stellar
resume, her record as security adviser is abysmal. Among other failures
and mistakes, she blithely forecast a nuclear attack from Saddam Hussein to
the American people, and she still got a raise.

Bush is obsessed with terrorism and he can't win anymore than Israel, much
better at this than us, can't win either, short of total annihilation. One
thing is clear. Iraqis, fighting Americans in Iraq are NOT terrorists.
The Iraqis that chose or had no choice but to be American collaborationists,
don't have the wherewithall to win a popular vote that is not rigged. Few
if any Iraqis that can speak freely and are not bribed want us there.
Bombs coerce but don't change minds in the way necessary to accomplished our
nominal goal in Iraq.

I expect so too.

I am becoming alarmed by recent news reports concerning apparent Iranian efforts
to develop long range missiles with nuclear warheads, and detailed reports on
their uranium enrichment facilities. The alarm bells began to ring when a load
of aerial/satellite reconnaisance pictures were shown, with little notes on them
that were uncannily reminiscent of the Cuba missile crisis.... 'building A' and
'probable centrifuging plant' etc. etc....

It made my blood run cold, though not because I think for a moment that the
Iranians are building a formidable array of nuclear weapons and delivery
systems - they are neither stupid nor suicidal. What worries me is that I see
carefully spun buildup of excuses and reasons being carefully instilled into us
all preparatory to some sort of attack on the country.

Does anyone agree, or am I perhaps being paranoid in a way other than that which
our governments would like me to be? An Iranian spokesman denied that this was
the case of course, and I felt another chill as doubts about his honesty and
integrity were added after his statement, not only by 'intelligence analysts'
and 'experts', but by reporters too. I smell a fishy rat - the 'softening up
process' (with regard to public opinion) seems to be getting underway.

I don't think you're paranoid at all, just clear-sighted.

How many months will it be before a majority of Americans are telling

I happen to think that they really are that incompetent. The
"intelligence" coming out about Iran is on a par with the
"intelligence" coming out of Iraq back then.

One of our current purposes by talking about what we suspect
is to derail the European attempts to bargain with Iran. We
want to bring it to the UN where, once again, things will be
voted down.

We can then blame the French again.

The NYTimes has had an epiphany in my opinion. Having been
beaten up by the Administration for being "partisan" and by
many folks for being too "liberal", they have decided to act
like a real newspaper. It is gloves off time. Don't expect
any action of the administration to go unexamined by the NYTimes.

No, go on Eve, name and shame!

On a serious note, do we want more photographs of the same person but
in different historical backgrounds?

The advantage of this is that it keeps the gallery alive and
interesting as we go forward from here, rather than it being a one-
off exercise, which we then revisit in x years time to update.

This is not to say that the gallery should become a repository for
picturesque travelogues, but rather perhaps one photograph which
an shm member wants to submit (voluntarily, Eve!) and which has some
relevance to history- preferably medieaval- but a certain flexibility
(as it does in the Ng) would apply.

I think it would be a nice way to keep in touch visually. What do you

I'd enjoy periodically seeing new pictures of people we've seen before

Paul has a lot of pictures of SHM people visiting Kalamazoo and
occasionally people get together from this and for other reasons.
These would be interesting to see. However, I don't know if Paul

I once hoped that folks would visit my site and get a look at
what some of those folks who wrote the books look like. But
perhaps I've buried it too deep.

Certainly I'd have no objection to someone linking to my pics.
If Wolf or anyone would like copies of some of the pics, feel

One thing I don't have are pictures of me. Somehow, I find
that I can't manage to be *in* the pictures I'm taking. There
are some of me on my site taken by other folks though.

Nah, that can't be tiglath. I've already seen his picture at

Although, I'm not sure why, most of the pictures match up to how I

Tellies are a must-have when a cell has no windows. You can't even raise a
fledgling birdie when they've got no way to get in. Very sharp razors can be
secreted in various places throughout the cell, but you have to keep them
well hidden.

Does the prison have a Xerxes Yard, I wonder?

So well, you can't seem to find them; hence the Cushing/Don Johnson look.

Don Johnson with socks, though. All that cold steel and concrete, and
tepid tea in Drizzle Yard... Brrrrrrr.

What's the rap? Bonaparte collaborationist?

That would be where you need eyes in the back of your head, not on the top
of it.

I'd need the shades and the rolled-up sleeves to complete the ensemble -
looks like you've already got them. A Sicilian Don Giovannison.

Need a razor to slice your garlic?

And those bars on your window could use a good file.

They never did make it clear, O Prince of the Peace.

The garlic-is-best-sliced-with-razor myth was started by The Valachi Papers,
by Peter Maas, who has the old don Vito Genovese doing it when he cooks in
jail . Lino Ventura played that character in the film. But it is not
true, garlic lives to its best possibilities when lightly crushed, and then
chopped, minced, or used whole. Genovese would have wacked Maas just for
that had he lived to know.

Beware, if you slice garlic with your razor and then shave, a Cushing trick
to be sure, it could lead to de facto solitary confinement in the big house,
much as we won't hold it against you here at s.h.m.

The proper way to get the goodness out of garlic is to use a GARLIC CRUSHER
, a device freely available at kitchen suppliers and even at some
supermarkets.
No Italian of any breeding uses a knife to cut garlic. The garlic crusher
squeezes out all the juice and fibre from a clove of garlic and even
projects the result some distance so allowing direct flavouring of the
common pizza and man-sized salads. Only Greeks and Gypsies would use a
knife!

Tsk!

Much as if you slice chillies then.... yes, well, never mind. Ahem, not the only
reason she's an ex...

You will be the chap who knows Tiggers, is this rubbing garlic on bullets (St
Valentines Day Massacre) truth or fiction? Cruel if so, not the scent I'd want
in mynostrils as I took my last breath...
Cheers

There is a man who deems garlic to be a spice, like most Anglo-Americans.

Mediterranean people consider it to be a vegetable.

Garlic is prepared in a variety of ways according to the dish. As long as
it is crushed somewhat it need not be done to a pulp. Garlic crushers are
appropriate when you use garlic only for its flavor, like in soups,
all-i-oli, stews, etc., but many Mediterranean dishes that require garlic
both for flavor and garnish, then it is half crushed with a single blow,
peeled and chopped up, often with parsley. Dishes like gambas as ajillo,
and pollo al ajillo, are two such dishes, out of many more all over the
Mediterranean. Countless other dishes require whole cloves of garlic.

Spoken like a true Englishman.

Not until I lived in England I met people who could detect garlic eaters
thirty feet away. It defies belief. And I am talking cooked garlic. I
prefer raw garlic. A good way is rubbed on hearty toast with olive oil and
salt.

I know little about the intricacies of cooking haddock or skate, but I can
think only of one other scent I would prefer as my last over garlic, and it
is not made by Chanel.
