Read any of those by Emerson--and then all of those by Virginia
Woolf--and add some Gibbon for style ;-)

about what are are you writing? there's a good series called "Writing
About...". they're small volumes and i believe that there's one on writing
about history, another about writing about art history, etc.

When I was in high school, the sisters taught us the critical essay consisted
of five paragraphs:

1)introduction of subject and three points of discussion,
2,3,&4) exposition of the three points,
5) conclusion.

While this is simple, it is direct and uncluttered. I must say, this style
got me through many an undergraduate essay exam!
