When I was in high school, the sisters taught us the critical essay consisted
of five paragraphs:
1)introduction of subject and three points of discussion,
2,3,&4) exposition of the three points,
5) conclusion.
While this is simple, it is direct and uncluttered. I must say, this style
got me through many an undergraduate essay exam!
