U.S. had made serious mistakes that led to the failure of the Vietnam
war and it had not learned from the past. Some of the serious mistakes
are:
1. Creating just causes for enemies to fight against the U.S.: The
U.S. plotted the coup that overthrew the government of S. Vietnam and
then sent troops to South Vietnam. President Diem previously
repeatably told US government that more American advisors and troops
would give a reason for communist to fight and recruit but the U.S.
overthrew him to take over the war.
The North Vietnamese and Vietcong supporters viewed this a new
colonial invasion from the U.S. In the Middle East , the invasion of
Iraq based on fabricated WMD evidences created a just cause for the
Arabs and American Islams to fight against American occupation in Iraq
and Afghanistan.
The U.S. should never give the enemies that reason to fight.
2. Human rights and civil liberties helped enemies to infiltrate and
destroy freedom. When a nation at war, it cannot afford to give the
enemies the rights and civil liberties. South Vietnam collapsed
because of communist infiltration that destroys its willingness to
fight, President Thieu ordered his troops to abandon posts and
withdraw, then President Big Minh ordered his troops to drop the guns
and surrender. Communist agents who grew inside South Vietnamese
government first orchestrated the collapse of South Vietnamese army
and the surrender.
To deal with terrorists and war, the U.S. must learn the lessons from
Vietnam by reducing civil liberties and freedom. The reason that a
terrorist can hid explosive in his underwear because Civili Liberty
Union and Congress objected the use of a sophisticated scanner that
could see the entire naked body. During war people must give up
privacy to be safe.
The U.S. could not detain Major Hasam before the Fort Hood massacre
because of respecting his civil liberties.
During WW II, president Roosevelt ordered the restrictions of civil
liberties of Japanese and German decents. The U.S. won the war. During
the Vietnam war, both U.S. and South Vietnamese allow enemy supporters
to operate freely and lost the war.
Freedom and civil liberties can be used by enemies to destroy freedom
and civil liberties. South Vietnamese people have learned this lesson
after the iron curtain covered South Vietnam in 1975. President Diem
was correct when he cracked down communist infiltration in Buddhist
church and the U.S. was wrong in stopping Diem in 1963. The U.S. is
also wrong today when it allows terrorits to take advantage of civil
liberties to kill Americans.
In war, Americans must give up some civil liberties and freedom to
survive.
