On the other hand you have claimed 35+ years of study of Sparta. So

If we were to evaluate Nelly’s performance from a military point of
view, say one of his former commanders checks out on how the old grunt
is doing and stumbles upon the battle he entered at
soc.history.ancient.

He would not believe his eyes.

First, the choice of battle:

Despite much evidence to the contrary this remains a historical forum
and from time to time valuable and interesting historical discussions
take place. It’s also a place or argument, and flame wars.

Why would Nelly chose to do battle here? His ancient history is non-
existent, his repartee and is as crude and repetitive as they come,
and his other intellectual abilities are gaspingly inconspicuous --
the wind blows him inexorably into the jaws of defeat.

Then comes the question of what else Nelly has to fall back on.

Being an ex-SAS – supposedly – he must have physical and mental
toughness and he could play those into credible assets.

But then again, the grunt has posted to the public domain a detail
description of how fucked up he is physically and emotionally, and it
took the enemy under a minute to find all about it.

Sun-Tzu would not approve.

Von Clausewitz would shake his head ruefully.

So now the enemy knows all his weak points, which he CONTINUES to
belabor, both the physical and the mental.

In addition to that he has made threats in writing that are actionable
and leave him open to consequences out of his control.

He stupidly thinks that a threat has to be overt and explicit to be a
threat, and that if he uses less overt language it does not constitute
a threat, but he is wrong. It’s a threat the moment the meaning is
clear enough to be perceived as a threat. He should check the statute
in HIS country.

In other words, he is playing stud poker with all cards facing up.

And the funny part is that he still bluffs.

By this time his former commander is feeling sick in the stomach, and
is ready to report Nelly to his superiors as a “systemic failure.”

The more likely story, however, is that Nelly is just a garden variety
moron who got stupid drunk and was hit by a bus, and he invented his
Internet persona, which he believes himself by now, as a way to be
able to live with himself.

Trust Nelly to reveal his ignorance of Sparta at full tilt with just a
QUESTION, and before he gives any answers.

His question implies that there was only ONE such foreigner who
received Spartan citizenship, which is DEAD WRONG.

He must have found some Wiki entry about it, which is good to ensnare
the ignorami like him.

It refers to Herodotus Book 9, 33-35, concerning the seer Tisamenos.
His citizienship was not HONORARY. Nelly needs to learn not only how
to spell that word, but also what it means.

Tisamenos was offered money and position to join the Spartan cause
prior to Platea, having foretold five Spartan victories. But
Tisamenos refused, he asked instead for full Spartan citizenship. The
Spartans were outraged and demurred but since the Persian threat
loomed large they relented and granted Tisamenos citizenship in
circumstances that hardly make it honorary. It was solicited payment
for services reluctantly paid. But it just so happens that in-for-a-
penny-in-for-a-pound Tisamenos extended the deal to his brother Hegias
as well, who also got Spartan citizenship in the bargain, as anyone
who has read Herodotus Historiae would know, but not Nelly.

Nelly is DEAD wrong to think that there was ONE such foreigner, there
were TWO.

If he does this well with his questions, I can’t wait for his
answers.
