Hi all,

I have seen that currently there isn't much genealogy software for
Linux. And what is there, isn't really close in comparison to what is
available for Windows.

So I'm wondering, would anyone besides me be interested in genealogy
software for Linux? I am willing to at least start writing it if anyone
is interested in it being there.

The first version would probably be simular to Brother's Keeper 5.5 for DOS.

Please let me know,

Chris

I am using Gramps and am quite pleased with it. However you are right
there is not much available. The K desktop is needing a good one. Good
Luck on your efforts.

Check out sourceforge.net - there are some projects there, I seem to
recall. Not sure of the present state of affairs. There might be
a project that has a good start and needs your talents, or it's a great
way for open-source folks to collaborate, sourceforge takes care of
much of the project organization & framework for you.

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for telling me about Gramps. It does seem to be rather easy to
use. Although it wasn't able to handle my GEDCOM file that had pictures
encoded in it.

A quick Google gave me 161,000 hits. Personally, I use GRAMPS
<http://gramps.sourceforge.net/>, but there's also FTree
<http://www.vjet.demon.co.uk/ftree/>, LifeLines
<http://lifelines.sourceforge.net/>, etc.

You can look at Linux & Main
<http://www.linuxandmain.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=237>
where they have a full artcle about various Genealogy apps.

I hope this helped!
