Hi all,

(this message is crossposted in soc.genealogy, soc.genealogy.benelux,
soc.genealogy.misc)

I created myself a problem....
A few years ago I helped my dad out with a database for genealogy.
Which worked kinda ok :)
Now he wants to switch to a more of the shelf program, with more functions,
etc
Of course he wants to re-use all his old data.
Most programs however only imports from GEDCOM files I heard. (is this
true?)

Some now I am looking for:
- a program to convert database data to gedcom format (i doubt it exists)
or
- a good description of the gedcom standard (to make a gedcom file myself)

The gedcom standard is described on the internet, but so far i could not
find a description I can use to create a valid GEDCOM file.

Does anybody have one of the things mentioned above or maybe urls,
emailadresses, etc to other sources that may be able to help me out?

Thanx!!

regards
harmen

Yes, GEDCOM is the standard for file exchange between genealogy programs.

The GEDCOM 5.5 format definition is here:
http://www.gendex.com/gedcom55/55gctoc.htm

Your existing data can probably be converted to GEDCOM format, but the questions
are:

What database are you using now?

Can it export text files (preferably CSV format)?

Can you modify it to create GEDCOM format files?

Is there a paper copy of your data?

Would you be willing to pay someone to do the conversion for you?

Yes, one does, if you're using the db it was created for. Try a
google-search for GEDCOM + Database

For a generic GEDCOM file to use as a flow-chart, try d/l one.
There are several ways to do it -- plain vanilla is probably best
right now, so I'd suggest you use www.familysearch.org and the
search tab; I *know* this one is in there from DOS-days, so look
for Marmaduke Swearingen; d/l it and print the file.

Alternately, since you're probably going to be using something
using the GED 5.5/unicode standards, you can check
www.rootsweb.com for their WorldConnect and d/l anything from
there.

Or, theoretically, you could try to make sense of the actual
printed Standard for Ged 5.5, but that's not for the
faint-of-heart.

Your father should print off paper copies of what he's got in the
db *right now* before you start tinkering. He'll need those
copies as reference so you can be sure everything that should
transfer has, anyway.

That's not my opinion.
You can scroll down (almost fully) on the page:
http://www.gendex.com/gedcom55/55gcch2.htm

And see how GedCom looks like.
All tags and datastructures are described there on one page.
Also you'll see descriptions with hits what not to use and how some tags are
implemented in other software. I did find this page the best page (and only
page) that contained all information to implement and understand the file
format.

I see, just copy the DB he has on CD.
And start converting in a separate "workspace", so avoid data loss.

The difficulty in producing a GEDCOM conversion program for a general database
file is that it all depends on your database structure - what fields you use.

With the GEDCOM specification you should, however, be able to write a report
for your database program that would produce a GEDCOM file for your particular
datafile.

Yes, save as and then at the end of what it's name is "familytree".txt
****.txt save it
then open it in your txt browser notepad whatever, delete untill the first
row of 001 name etc etc everything above the first line of "real" info and
at the bottom the same, then open your paf or whatever you use, and import
it.

Formerly my bistros website, hence the odd name for a genealogy site! (Too
cheap for a new one!)

It has hundreds of BMD and Census, Cemetery transcriptions, convict lists
etc etc. all are completely free no subscription, no fees, just click on the
place and it goes straight to the list/site.

It is brand new as of yesterday, and I am hoping to work more on
it....making it organized a little better (right now done by country and
some by topic) and get more links up there. If you know of any FREE (must be
or it won't go up there) links, please email me with "Link" in the subject
line.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Jamie

www.goDaddy.com is not very expensive if you want a new domain..

just scann the history of this group via google for Genealogy links, then
you will find a lot of "free" links (I do not understand what you mean by
free links, most genealogy sites are free; www.archief.delft.nl ,
www.genlias.nl etc.).
