I wondered if any listmembers have ever encountered the name "Painter" while
researching in Jamaica prior to 1810 or so. Searches in Jamaica Family
Research and other sources have yielded nothing, although I have seen the
name once or twice on later maps relating to several plantations in the
general vicinity of Port Antonio.

I'm trying to determine if the family has ties to Connecticut and may have
been a merchanting family which acquired interests in eastern Jamaica as a
consequence of their accounts in Ja.

Any leads very much appreciated

NICHOLAS PAINTER of Anne Arundell Co., Md., gent, now residing in London,
dated 8 Sep 1684. To my cousin Henry Bray of London, glazier, my 4,000 acres
in Dorchester Co., Md., held by three patents granted by Lord Baltimore. To
my brother Roger Painter of Andover, Hants., husbandman, my 700 acres on Wye
River, Talbot Co., Md. To my sister Katherine Painter of Andover, spinster,
my 700 acres in Anne Arundell Co. To Mrs. Barbara Trinder of Abchurch Lane,
London, spinster, my 1050 acres in Cecil Co., Md. To Katherine Keate,
daughter of John Keate of Andover, my 400 acres in Tuckahoe, Talbot Co. To
William Hawkins of London, scrivener, a half part of 1000 acres on Chester
River, Talbot Co., half of 1700 acres in Dorchester Co. and half of 900 acres
in Cecil Co. To John Hawkins of London, distiller, £5. I give their freedom
to my negroes Tom and Sarah. Residue to my exec. Henry Bray. Wits: William
Evans, Joseph Huckebutt and John Jenkins. Pro. 8 Oct 1685 by the named exec.

Realize it isn't Jamaica but rather send it than not.
