Hello David

I have been researching my ancestors in Dominica and managed to visit their and look through various archives.  Unfortunately most of them are very fragile and damaged.  I got most of my information through the LDS who borrowed microfilms of parish records from Salt Lake City and allowed me to spend hours in my local centre pouring through them.  They were in French so I had to painstakingly translate them.

Hope this helps.

Hello!

I'm looking for sources of family history information in Dominica
covering the late 18th C and early 19th C. Can anyone tell me sources
of births, marriages and deaths records, land ownership records, lists
of residents, etc. etc.?

Are any other members of this group researching Dominican roots from
about that time?

Many thanks.

Hi David

I have been researching my ancestors in Dominica and have visited the island which was interesting, but the records I looked at were very fragile and damaged.  Most of my information was discovered through the LDS as they obtained the microfilms of records from Salt Lake City so I could view them in their centre.

Regards,

Enid

Hi David,
Go to the Family History Library site at
:http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp  and
do a place search on Dominica.

You will find the sources they have available on microfilm.

It is far preferable to scan through microfilm and fiche than to handle
the originals, for the convenience of the researcher and from a
preservation standpoint.
The BVI Archives Unit has employed consultant archivists from the
Bahamas to help make a start on conserving and indexing those records
that have managed to survive far too many years of neglect and poor
storage. Although members of the public is not given direct access to
the original documents, they can make appointments to examine the
substantial collection of microforms and photocopies that the Unit is
building up .
