Hi Ann

Please go on the site below :
http://www.memoirestbarth.com/st-barts/population/recensement-1681
Below the sentence "Recensements Français et Suédois de l'île de
Saint-Barthélemy de 1671 à nos jours"  choose one year
Note that nominative lists of names are given only for two years : (1681)
and (1790?)  (then you need to click click on "Recensement nominatif" )
Other census are just quantitative
There is one entry for QUESTEL in the (1790?) nominative list
Hoping that helps

My pleasure
I made a mistake : in the (1690?) census there is not one entry for QUESTEL
but two  (Jacques = Jack and Charles)
I suppose you have already visited Marie Anne DANET site dealing with the
French early settlers of St Thomas coming from St Barthelemy ?
Among them there is a certain Robert Questel, a native of Saint-Arnoult,
Normandie, France. He was hired in 1636 to travel to the islands (of the
Antilles)
Her listings of St. Thomas consist of births and marriages of the French
immigrants from Saint-Barthelemy  which were registered on St. Thomas,
starting in the late 1800s : there are numerous QUESTEL from 1874 onwards
But what was your grandfather's first name ?
Philippe

My grandfather's name was Isidore, he also had a brother, Leopold, who followed him.  My grand parent's marriage bands list his fathar as Jacques, I only saw the document once and it was somewhat tattered, pieces of were missing, so I don't know is that was his first or second name.Their first child was born in 1881, so he had to come to the island of ST. Thomas sometime before 1880.Ms. Danet has the family listed in the St. Thomas church records, with the marriage date of 1920?, but I think that was the Catholic marriage, not the Moravian marriage. Her name was Caroline. There is a family story of Isidore's father hired to go to St. Barth to run a cigar/cigarette co, but it could have been an older ancestor.Ann
