G'Day Judy and Peter,
I have been here before but here goes again. My specific problem is finding
an age for William Glanville who was the GG Grandfather of my wife. His
daughter indicates in a book she published she was related to Ann Grace
Glanville nee Warren (Heroine of the Hamoase) who married John Glanville, a
waterman. Without an age I cannot close down on his parentage. I know from
his army records at Kew:-
Born St Andrews Devon, a brushmaker, enlisted 3 Feb 1831 in 85th Regt giving
NOK as father John Glanville.
Transferred to 47th Regt 2 May 1831, served in Malta, Gibraltar, Barbados,
St Kitts, Ireland and England.
Discharged 15 March 1849 in Limerick, Ireland and was a Pensioner Guard on
prison hulk Warrior at Woolwich in 1850 before leaving for Western Australia
on the convict ship Pyrenees on 30 Mar 1851.
Married Sophia Duck in Daventry England in 1844 (widow of Sgt. Duck - died
in St Kitts, previously widow of Pte. Kellam - died in Malta, nee Gomez born
in Madrid). All 3 of Sophia's husbands were in same 47th Regt and she met
them first in Gibraltar.
Worked in prison system in Western Australia till sacked in 1854, wrote a
letter from Cape Town asking to be reinstated - refused. Wrote a short
letter from London (no date) saying he was going to a job as an 'Overseer'
in Bermuda and then vanished, no idea whether he actually got there.
So.........
Dodged 1841 UK census in army.
Dodged 1851 census on boat on way to Oz.
Dodged 1861 census, whereabouts unknown.
Marriage cert gives him as "of mature age" but does record his father as
John, a seaman.
Army pay books do not have any record of his age (confusion at enlistment
over which Regt. he was going to be in).
Prison service records in Oz have no record of an age.
Ann (Heroine of Hamoaze) Glanville's list of kids includes a 'William' who
is still a kid at home after my William was already in the army so it seems
unlikely she is his mother unless he ran away from home and she assumed him
dead,
aunt perhaps??
Only place I have not chased an age is the Chelsea Pensioner records which I
believe cover the Enrolled Pensioner Guards in the UK prison service (did
not know about them during the two days I managed at Kew Archives some years
ago - too far to go for another look). I cast straws like this in the wind
ever hopeful someone may have the missing "age".
Is there any possibility there is a list of guards/overseers for the
convicts or slaves in book you mention that includes a William Glanville
from 1854 on??
