You're right it always slows dramatically in the summer. I have recently had
some interesting correspondence from a Matthew Parker who has written
several books on the Caribbean vicinity. One was on the Panama Canal....
Otherwise things very wet here not at all the customary June
In your various searches on Jamaica have you ever heard reference to the
Manchioneal Cotton Company??????
Seems to have been in existence around the 1860's
Otherwise nice to be back in the northeast settled (almost) with books desk
etc.

I've been pretty busy, what with working on the 2009 Ontario Genealogical
Society Conference ... hosted this year by my branch, Halton-Peel, May
29-31. I've also taken over the position of Cemetery Co-ordinator for the
branch, and that's kept me pretty busy getting cemeteries, which have been
recorded, published. I still work 2 1/2 days a week as well ..
I did a search on Google Books and found that besides Manchioneal Cotton
Company, there were also the Jamaica Cotton Company, the Clarendon Cotton
Company and the Kingston Cotton Company. Quite a bit of stuff out there,
available for download, including The Merchant's Magazine and Commercial
Review, vol. 47, June -December, 1862, p. 193, and The Cotton Supply
Association: its origin and progress, 1871, pp. 93-97, also a couple of
pages in Douglas Hall's book, Free Jamaica: 1838-1865, an economic history,
which I own. It's also mentioned in Illustrations of martial Law in Jamaica,
by John Gorrie, about the Morant Bay Rebellion, which is also available for
download from Google Books. I can email you scans of the pages from Hall's
book if you like.

Yes thank you I'd love to see the piece in Hall's book
The rest I'll follow through on. I had made the original discovery of the
firm via a Google search, I guess the world is just scanning like mad these
days!
One thing I'm trying to break through on is who they traded through in
Liverpool but imagine that will have to be studied in Jamaica or British
Archives. Also how the arrowroot was being shipped from eastern Jamaica
period 1800-1865...haven't found a clue on that one....
Anyway when you have time would be most thankful and nice to see you are
busy

I know how the ARROWROOT used to ship from the Caribbean to
the UK, & America, My grandFathers on both side of the family, had Arrowroot
Factories, after pulling the Arrowroot, it was skinned then put through a
mill, grounded , and taken out some of the starch as they are very starchy>
and dried in the sun then Bagged up in thick white bags , and sent abroad,
I used to see my older families do that when I was about 9 years old a
younger , but I didn't know what it was for until I was 9 , then after my
first Grandfather died the other one Used to do it with the other family,
Then Grand-dad, got to old to work, and most of the younger Generation
didn't want to work so hard, but I still have some Family in St Vincent,
that still do ship Arrowroot abroad, there are lots of things to do to it
before drying it, I used to like to watch them doing it, and wanted to help
but seeing I was a Girl, they protect girls in St Vincent, back then, but
things changed up a lot now, last time I was home, 2000,
I saw one of my Niece & her Husband doing it to ship up here to the UK to
make Biscuits, they used to make Biscuits out of it to, but its their
living, so they sell most of it, Interesting really,
