Hi All,


I am new about here so will introduce myself.


I am an experience genealogist but new to researching in this area.


My current interest is in a family in Jamaica. William McCORKELL (son of Dr William McCORKELL) married Arabella Bancks EDWARDS in Jamaica in 1852 and they had an number of children in Jamaica between 1854 and 1860 before they moved back to UK and had more children in London.


I would be delighted to learn anything about this family or to know where I should be searching for it

Do you know what parish the McCorkell's were in? Jamaican records are
divided into parishes and it will be difficult but not impossible to
find information on marriages and baptisms. The LDS or Mormon church
has microfilmed the Anglican Church records of the period you are
seeking and they are available through their Family History centers for
a small fee.In London the FHC has many of the films on site, so you do
not have to order them and wait. If you have no idea of a parish or if
you know they were Roman Catholic, Jewish or Methodist, the best source
is Patricia Jackson's site http://jamaicanfamilysearch.com This is a
subscription site but is very reasonable at $8.00 US (less than 5 GBP)
for a month.

England in Jamaica and these can be found on the FamilySearch website,

A search on the name McCorkell or McCorkill brings up baptisms of three
children for William Mccorkill and his wife, Arabella Banks. Here is the

William McCORKELLl and Arabella EDWARDS where married at the Cathedral in Spanish Town, in 1852, but that does not say they were living in that parish

It seems that Familysearch.org reveals three children Dorothy's way
and then two more children if one fills out only the parents' names
and leaves the primary blanks empty. Then more results pop up when one
puts in Jamaica and year range 1840 to 1860. Oh, the mysteries of
search engines!

The Jamaican registers at this time are beautiful and so easy to read.

Here are six children, and of course there may be more:

Catherine Frances McCorkell b 27 Sept 1853 St. Ann parish, Middlesex
County, abode Richmond, he is a planter
William Smith Maccorkell b 28 Nov 1854 St. Ann parish, Middlesex
County, abode Richmond, he is a planter
Trevor Bancks Maccorkill b. 17 Dec 1855 St. Ann parish, Middlesex County
Harry Mostyn Maccorkill b 23 July 1860 Kingston abode Milk Street
Geraldine Maccorkill b 12 May 1862 abode Milk Street
Ethel Mccorkell baptised 19 June 1866, Surrey, England

The search also brought up the 1938 death in Seattle, Washington, USA,
of a man named William Mccorkell, estimated birth year 1856, whose
parents were Wiliam McCorkell and Arabella Edwards. This might lead
you to an obituary, as they were popular by then. Further research of
the cemetery -- the purchaser of the lot, for example--may tell you
more about that line.

Finding the above death is what sent me back to the search engine to
find that child. I filled in only the mother's first name as "Arabella
Bancks" leaving the surname blank, Jamaica as place of birth and year
range as 1840-1870, and the baptismal record for William Smith
Maccorkell came up.

I went into Google Books and searched McCorkell +Jamaica and found this:
William McCorkell, son of Isaac McCorkell, MD, surgeon in militia,
born Mary 21, 1794, in Donegal, Ireland, died Oct 10, 1831 in Vere
Jamaica, justice of the peace . . . issue:
William, born Feb 20, 1826, died March 8, 1887; married Dec 9, 1852,
Arabella Bauchs Edwards. This is on page 82 of the book Samuel
Carpenter and his descendants by Louis Henry Carpenter.

When I went back to familysearch and put in Isaac as a father, I
found William Mc Corkell's birth in Kingston 20 Feb 1826.

Thank you for the very helpful answer from a number of group members.


You have given me a lot to go on.


One missing aspect is the marriage of William McCorkell and Arabella Banks Edwards. This is said to have taken place at the Cathedral in Spanish Town on 9th December 1852. This is from a Liverpool (Uk) newspaper announcement


Are the catedral registers available on line? I cannon find this marriage anywhere

Norwich to Bermuda in 1830 to serve 2 seven year sentences. The Prison Hulk
records indicate he was on the prison hulk Hardy before deportation. Does
anyone know if there are records of prisoners arriving/dying/departing
Bermuda?

Tam,
You can use the FHL catalog at familysearch.org to find "List of
parish registers inventoried in Jamaican archives." It doesn't seem
that FHL microfilmed the registers from the year you need, but the
list indicates the parish registers are at the archives. Maybe someone
on the list who lives in Jamaica could check at archives for you.

Also, don't forget to search the PRO databases. I've noticed legal
documents regarding St. Croix there.

I have searched the PRO Archives, but will keep looking for the marriage. The bride was in Uk in 1851 census and (suposedly) married in December 1852
Just time enough to get to Jamaica and meet her man - although they were probably friends in UK

collections, then to Caribbean, Central America, etc., and from the list you
get go to Jamaica Church of England Parish Register Transcripts, 1664-1880,
you can browse the images, since only the baptisms have been indexed from
the scanned images. Searching the scanned images is a bit difficult if you
aren't familiar with the microfilms in the first place. I searched the
marriage indexes for St. Catherine (where Sspanish Town is located) and
found a citation for the marriage of William McCorkill. It's a bit tricky
from there finding the actual marriage, which is in Parish Registers of
baptisms, marriages and burials, vol. 2 of the New Series, but I did find
your marriage and will send it to you as an attachment separately.

There is a marriage of William McCorkell in St Catherine in 1852. It is
in the New Series Volume 2 folio 297. And the comparable listing for
Arabella Edwards lists the same page and volume. This is obtained by
_browsing_ in the index to Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1847-1871
Vol 2 in St Catherine. It appears that the Family Search has not filmed
the New Series films, at least I cannot find it listed, but you can get
the microfilm though the Family History Centers.

Thanks to Madeleine for giving the actual citation which I also found. It
is difficult finding the actual microfilm from the way that the LDS have
listed them on their website but I did find it, under St. Catherine parish,
instead of under All Parishes. It is listed on the website as St. Catherine
Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, v. 2, which is incorrect as it is actually New
Series All Parishes, and if you look at the contents page, includes baptism,
marriages and burials for several parishes, including St. Catherine. The
spine is labelled "New Series Bap Mar Bur Parish Register 1848-1860 Vol. 2".
I cannot understand why it is listed under St. Catherine in that case.

I've sent T@M a scan of the image from the parish register.

I've had a few minutes and I cannot find anything at all in the Church
Registers which have been put into book form and on a CD to research -
really, I did not think I would
as he was a prisoner and if he did not marry, baptize a child or himself and
there was no burial record as he left
Bermuda and went to Australia.

Then there is a book entitled Forty Years of Convict labour by Hallett -
Bermuda 1823-1868.
Again his name is not listed - I believe he would have tried to escape or
done something noteworthy
to be in this book. So I'm at a loss to help you.

You can try contacting Andrew Bermingham - he has researched the Naval
Dockyards and may be able to help.

In the book - 40yrs. of convict labour there is one DUNCAN, Charles -
1851-1852 - guard St. George's, resigned
as your person of interest was a convict, this is not him, however, may have
been a relative.
He is simply listed in the PERSONNEL LIST with no additional information
about him.

The UK National Archives holds lists of convicts on board convict hulks.
The convict hulks shown for Bermuda in the period 1830 to 1844 are
Antelope, Coromandel, Dromedary, Tenedos and Thames, and their quarterly
returns are in the records HO 8/23-82. Notes on the record description
indicates that "Section XIV of the Transportation of Offenders Act 1824
(5 Geo IV chapter 85) provided that the Superintendent of Convicts
should make sworn quarterly returns of prisoners in the hulks to the
Secretary of State", and so James Duncan should appear in each relevant
return for the period of his stay at Bermuda. Do you know whether he
served the whole of the 14 years of his sentences?
