On an 1852-3 shipping record an ancestor's occupation, is stated as
W.Houseman". Anyone know what this is?? He came from the Manchester area and
was a house painter/decorator and grainer in Australia. His father was a
Wesleyan Minister and a weaver.

Thanks,
Lucy Nuttall (Ballarat, Victoria, Australia)

Hi, Lucy.
Your w.houseman is just another version of w/houseman, which is an
abbreviated form of WAREHOUSEMAN, so he was responsible for stock
in a warehouse. If you can get an address for him in the UK in
1851, the census should expand on that, as warehousemen normally
stated what kind of goods were in the warehouse. One of my ancestors
appears as "jewellery warehouseman" for instance.
Best of luck.
Gordon.

Warehouseman: i.e. someone who is employed in a storage/distribution centre
loading/unloading/recording goods.
