"New Germantown is Settled"
Taken from
"Traditions of our Ancestors "
And now our part of the storycomes in. Directly from Germantown, PA., a
portion of the same bodywho came from Europe came to New Jersey to look for
land. The best portions along the Delaware had already been purchased
though not actually settled. The Dutch had grants for the fertile Raritan
Valley. Speculators held at high pricesthe broad, rich lands of the
Musconetcong, but up in this remote corner, secluded, engulfed by mountans,
wide, rich and beauriful, lay a table land stretching for miles---- as fair
a landscapeas farmer could wish-----land generally rolling----plentyof stone
and lumber and everything that nature could give to assist people who wished
to make a living by husbandry, and were willing to work and improve their
homes, this would do, and here they determinedto settle. Yet they were
poor----markets were far away---they had few utensils, and it was much as
they could do to live, for many years. They were steadfast in their faith,
however, and held meetings of worship. Sometimes a preacher would come up
from Philadelphia and minister the word unto them.
