I would like to get in touch with anyone who is seriously researching
the name Lawless in Ireland. There must be someone out there with
a similar interest considering the fact that in 1993 there were 3,847
people with the name in Ireland, 3,632 in Great Britain, 1,158 in
Canada, 8,892 in the U.S., 2,477 in Australia etc.
I have 300 pages of overlapping biographies including farmers, barons,
knights, lords, RC bishops & priests, Church of Ireland Ministers, a
Church of Eng. Bishop of Canada, teachers, scribes and convicts
(many of whom were transported to Australia). Some were good,
some were bad, but they are all mine.
The name Lawless began in Ireland with the arrival of the Norman,
Sir Hugh de Laighleis, in 1172. The names Laghles, Laules, Lawles
& Lawless appear frequently in medieval records up to the end of
the 16th century in Leinster & Munster, particularly in Cos. Kilkenny
& Dublin. There are 82 Manuscript Sources for the History of Irish
Civilisation, and its first supplement, with references to the name.
According to I.G.I sources in the later half of the 19th century alone
there were more than 200 Lawless births and more than 60 marriages.
in Ireland.
They built manors in the vale of Shanganagh, Kilruddery, Corkagh &
Old Connacht, all in the Bray area. In the 1500s they were Lords of
Talbot's Inche in Co. Kilkenny and another branch were, for four
generations, the Barons of Cloncurry at Lyons House in Co. Kildare.
Emily Lawless, 1845-1913, was a well known author & poet but her
works were largely ignored, no doubt because of her feelings on Home
Rule.
Anyone interested in exchanging information?
Denis Lawless, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
