Subject: Swedish/Finnish Ancestors (Oestman/Hermansson)
I hope that some kind soul can help my wife with some of her ancestors.
There is a marriage in Hull, 1876 of

Petter Oestman (36) son of Franz Oestman (farmer and deceased) with
Helena Sofia Hermansson (27) daughter of Jacob Hermansson (seaman and
deceased).

The 1881 UK Census gives Petter as being Swedish and Helena as Finnish.

From the Hiski site I think I have found details of Helena's parents
who seem to have come from Kokkola, Finland.  At the time of Helena's
birth this area of Finland was predominantly Swedish speaking.  Now come
the questions:-

1.  Could Petter have actually been born in Finland and yet thought of
himself as Swedish?
2.  Are there any other spellings of Oestman that I could search for to
find information for him?  In Hull he eventually called himself
Estman/Estmann.
3.  If anyone has access to Swedish records that could help pin down
Petter I would be grateful.

Thank you

David

Maybe himself, but it is a bit early for that. And the census info
should mean
country and not ethnicity.

The normal spelling in Swedish is Östman.

Thank you for the information.  It gives me another avenue to research.
