British pre-Rhodesians

Someone asked in a South African mailing list about people who appeared in UK
censuses in 1911 with their birthplace listed as "Rhodesia", and the date of
birth in the 1880s.

It's an anachronism, of course, because "Rhodesia" did not exist until the
1890s, but by 1911 it was certainly the name by which the place was known in
Britain.

The question was, what were the parents doing there at that time?
