Hi Kathy,

Census records are always released 75 years after they are taken in the U.S.
So the 1930 census will be available in 2005.

Regards, Ted

Sorry, but you are off by 3 years. The magic number is 72 years. The 1930
census will be released to the public by the National Archives and Records
Administration (NARA) on 1 Apr 2002. The details are on NARA's web page at:

http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/1930cen.html

The indexes (Soundex) will also be released that day, but only 10 states are
completely indexed and 2 more are partly indexed.

Thank you for the authoritative and tactful post. I am new to
genealogy and in the last couple weeks have seen sources reference the
period as 70 (a genealogy guide book, so the internet isn't the only
place to get bad info), 72 and 75 years. Every statement was made in an
equally absolutely positive style.

Thank you for taking the time to locate and post the source.

And then, how soon will the LDS have them and start loaning them
out... and then how long to stand "in-line" to get one??

Have 'em? Probably within the week. (g) Send them out on loan?
ummm, maybe two months? Isn't that what the 1920 took? (g)

What I want to know is -- how soon can I place my order for one
county's film?

As I understand it, LDS buy masters from NARA and makes their own copies for
distribution to patrons. In 1992, as I remember, it took almost a year
before all the 1920 census and soundex films were available for
distribution, although some became available within a couple of months.

If you mean from NARA, on 1 Apr 2002. If you mean from Salt Lake, stay
tuned. In addition to the microfilm reading room at NARA in Washington DC,
the 13 regional NARA offices will have the full set on 1 Apr 2002, but there
will probably be long lines to view them for a while.

Probably not such long lines since, unlike the 1920 census, most of the
1930 census is not soundexed. I would expect that companies, such as
Heritage Quest, will quickly have the entire 1930 census available on
CD.

I'm sure that they will press ahead to get all of it on CD as soon as
possible, but they have to wait to get the copies of the film rolls
themselves. There is an awful lot of microfilm to scan, enhance, check, and
put on CD. So that will take a while <g>.
