Our dear AT&T, in its infinite wisdom, has determined that usenet is not its
cuppa tea, so it will eliminate that service sometime in the middle of
July. Since bellsouth.net is part and parcel of ATT, that means me.
I will still surf the surname forums on Genweb for any info on BROWNLEE,
FRENCH, CONNELL, ORR, DUNN, SUTHERLAND, BERNHARDT, BLISS, HOWARD, SPENCE,
MAGILL/McGILL, KERNER, SHUKER, McMAHON, MATHERNE, SAVOIE, PICOU, MALBROUGH,
TOURELLE, MARTIN, HEBERT, MARTINY, KIMBLE, FEDERER, VAN GORDEN, COULTER,
CANTRELLE, BLANCHARD, RICHOUX, VEAZEY, TRAHAN, BABIN, BERGERON, BOQUET, and
a few dozen others.
Until then, I will continue to check out the usenet groups.
It has been a learning experience! And I have found some dear friends and
cousins I am still to meet in the flesh.

Unless there are other reasons, please don't drop out. There are a
number of free providers of Usenet access. The one I use is Eternal
September (http://www.eternal-september.org/), which requires a signup
but is otherwise free. There are also a number of pay services, though
they tend to be quite reasonable. Frequently recommended in that
category is News.Individual.Net (http://news.individual.net/), which
runs 10 (ten euros) per year.

I went through this a couple of weeks ago and found aioe.org. It is
free and so far I have been satisfied.
Same here. First I used Motzarella then they told me to change to
news.eternal-september.org
It's free and I'm happy.
Like previously mentioned, Motzarrela which will soon become
http://www.eternal-september.org/ is what I was recommended by another
newsgroup.
I left Time Warner Cable because they did away with Newsgroups. Now
AT&T is doing the same thing.

Well, looks like there are at least a couple or three free sites for
newsgroups. I will check them out. AT&T is touting upcoming changes in their
Email service - to be powered by Yahoo. They don't say, but does Yahoo have
a paid subs for newsgroups and that is why AT&T is dropping what they
currently provide as part of their service? Just wondering.
Henry
Just go to Google & sign up for Google Groups - no fuss, no bother, no
$$$. Many, but not all, of the USENET Groups are easily accessible
there.
NT
Good. We'd miss you.

I've been using Individual.net since before it became a pay service, and
I must say I recommend it highly and find the price to be more than
reasonable.

Many share your opinion. Many also know that Google Groups is the
source of tons of junk/spam, and the source of lots of bad habits like
failing to quote *any* of the relevant portions of articles when
responding, etc., and they therefore filter out *all* such articles.
Maybe overkill, but...

I too use Eternal September (and used its previous incarnation,
Motzarella). It does all I need and Ray banana gives excellent support.
But it does not host binary newsgroups, and you cannot register using an
AT&T e-mail address. This also applies to other domains handled by AT&T
mail servers such as Bellsouth, SBCGLOBAL, Prodigy etc.

Google groups does not provide a proper server. The newsgroups are gated to a
web site.
It's better than nothing, but if you want proper Usenet access, go for
eternal-september.

Have you written to them and asked if you can pay a reduced subscription for
their reduced service?
If no one complains, they will continue to treat their customers like dirt.
Everyone who suffers these reductions in service should write to them to
complain. Say you will be looking for an ISP that provides a full Internet
service, and not a partial one.
"Newsgroups were a FREE added service that we provided at no charge.
They were not included in your contract and you have never paid for
them. We can unfortunately no longer provide these FREE services in
these tight economic times."
Voila, no obligations. And they will not lose subscribers because all
too often they are the only game in town. At least my provider,
Brighthouse/Road Runner provided a free alternative newsgroup provider.

The easy solution to that is to open and use a freebie email account such as
Hotmail.
I have all my mailing lists on such an account, just to prevent my main one
getting clogged up with all the Gatewayed stuff.
Lesley Robertson
Perhaps not, but the newsgroups do not have concern about which ISP is used
to access them.
Henry
We were only discussing problems with AT&T.
There's other free email providers. That's why I said "such as Hotmail".
However, I can't see how it matters whether one email provider approves of
another one.
Lesley Robertson
Could it be the time hono{u}red confusion between this as a usenet
newsgroup and this as a mailing list gatewayed to usenet? On the one
hand, we have the situation Henry and the rest of us have been 'cussin'
and discussin', on the other is, well, an entirely different problem which
is only exacerbated by the poor reputations of the likes of hotmail,
gmail, yahoo and others when it comes to controlling spam or responding
positively to reports of spam.
