This has been languishing unnoticed over on alt.genealogy for a week
now, so I thought I'd haul it over here for y'all's attention?

I know the Butler lines are nearly impossible to separate -- I was
told that 37 years ago by someone who'd been trying for 50 years.

I need to prove/disprove the birth of Elisha Smith Butler. I have a
fistful of sources that claim he was born in Hartford Connecticut;
all give the identical date. Upon inquiry, Hartford (both city and
county) denies it.

I'm ONLY interested in his parentage; I have more than I want about
his descendants -- who do NOT include Benjamin B.
Names of children are included in case one of them happens to be a
"marker" for a specific line of Butlers.

Elisha Smith BUTLER was born on 8 Jun 1798 in Hartford, ,
CN. He died on 5 Apr 1888 in Tyrone, , PA. He was a
Methodist minister. PROBABLY a brother to the Rev. William
Butler. Family has visited and photographed the cemetery.

Elisha married (1) Sarah COUSERT about 1824. Sarah died
about 1835.

They had the following children:

2 M. Joseph Wesley BUTLER was born about 1824. He died as
a child before 1850.
3 M William Henry Harrison BUTLER was born about 1826. He
died as a child before 1850
4 M Elisha Smith BUTLER was born about 1828. He died as a
child before 1850.
5 M Frank T BUTLER died after 1888, , Wisconsin. [NOT yet
a proven child; single reference to him, in Wisconsin, that
mentions his parents by name.]

Elisha married (2) Martha Greene GANOE daughter of James GANOE and
Barbara (SCHMIDT OR SNYDER) on 31 Dec 1841. Martha was born on 8 Sep
1817 in Warrior's Mark,Huntington, PA. She died on 10 Oct 1912 in
Newark, , NJ. She was buried in Evergreen Cem, Elizabeth, NJ.

They had the following children:

6 M Elisha BUTLER was born in 1843 in Warrior's Mark, ,
PA. He died on 9 Aug 1931 in Newark, , NJ. Elisha married
Mary I --?--.

7 F Emma Melissa BUTLER was born on 13 May 1845 in
Warrior's Mark, , PA. She died on 3 Sep 1863 in Castle Finn,
York co, PA.

8 F Electa M BUTLER was born on 23 Mar 1848 in Bedford, ,
PA. She died on 10 Aug 1938. She was buried in Milton, , PA.

9 F Ellen M BUTLER was born in 1850 in Hancock, , MD.
She died on 30 Nov 1936 in Riverside, , CA.

10 M Edwin L BUTLER was born on 15 Nov 1851 in Frostburg,
Allegany, MD. He died on 15 Dec 1930 in Altoona, , PA. Edwin
married Martha CRAMER daughter of Eli VanEman CRAMER and
Susannah WEIGHT about 1885. Martha was born on 26 Mar 1864.

11 F Elmyra M BUTLER was born in 1854 in Cumberland,
Allegany, MD. She died on 13 Feb 1838 in Monterrey Park, , CA.

12 M Emmanuel BUTLER was born on 23 Dec 1856 in
Birmingham, Huntington, PA. He died on 2 Dec 1931 in Newark,
, NJ.

13 M Eber BUTLER was born on 27 Dec 1858 in Bloomingdale,
Luzerne, PA. He died about 1940/1950 in Harrisburg, , PA.

14 M Ellsworth BUTLER was born in 1860 in Sunbury,
Northumberland, PA. He disappeared in 1914.

Children 6 thru 13 have living descendants, some of whom I recognize
in a crowd. My info includes info developed and shared by some of
those persons.

Thanks for any clues!

Don't you mean that there's no record of the birth in Hartford that
has been found?

Are there any mug books for entries pertaining to Elisha? Since he
was a Methodist minister, who lived to be almost 90, he was probably
widely known and respected and it would not be suprising for there
to be a mug book, or local history, biography of him.

Also, Methodist publications. Again, given that he was a Methodist
minister who lived to an advanced age, it would not be suprising if
there were biographies or detailed obituaries for him in Methodist
magazines or other publications.
