Sorry, I was sort of hoping someone with expertise in NC would
squeek up, but since they haven't --
First, seems to me I read somewhere that NC is another of those
states where there is no deed if the land stays "in the blood". Nor
is the land necessarily mentioned in a will. So, you need to either
track the tract by name or other designation, not by names, AND
you'll be wanting the land-tax records to see who was paying taxes
on it.
Since men of three different surnames sold chunks of land to the
same person, poke around for wills the year before to see if these
men are mentioned therein -- or if the surname itself is. At a
quick glance, appears to me that the three men inherited land
through their mothers who were probably sisters.
Of course, if you get lucky, someone who actually researches NC will
have a better idea and share it now just to make me feel blonde. (g)
