There is a Genealogical Tree of the Buchanan Family drawn by William
Colquhoun in 1602 published in John Guthrie Smith, F. S. A., Scot.,
"Strathendrick and Its Inhabitants from Early Times: A Chapter of
Lennox History," (Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, Publishers to the
Univeristy, 1886). The tree shows the marriage of Janet Cunningham
and Patrick Buchanan.
For Patrick Buchanan and Janet Cunningham the tree shows two circles.
The left circle says: "Patrik Laird of boquhannan mareit calbreth
erurix of bantoit, killearn, bachintrach and bigat on dochter." The
right circle says: "Secondly he mareit coninghame dochtir to the Laird
of baditindalloch and bigat ii sonnes."
For Janet Cunningham's parents the tree shows two circles. The left
circle says: "Coninghame Lairde of baditindalloch mareit coninghame
dochtir to ye Lairde of glengarnock suhois [I can't quite make out the
first letter of the previous word, but it must be the possessive form
of someone's name] fone." The right circle says: "fucceditt to ye
Landis of baditindalloch be ye marriage of one dochtir."
I interpret that Janet Cunningham's parents were both surnamed
Cunningham, her father being the Laird of Baditindalloch and her
mother being a daughter of the Laird of Glengarnock. I estimate that
Janet was born in about 1430. So, her parents would have been born
probably in about 1400. That might make her mother's parents William
Cunningham of Glengarnock and Christian Colquhoun--in which case
"suhois fone" might be "John's son." And it might make her father's
father Humphrey Cunningham of Ballindalloch.
Can anyone help me to identify Janet Cunningham's parents?
Thanks,
Shawn Potter
