Hi Suzanne. The Nov. 1927 issue of _Stewart Clan Magazine_ (published by
George Thomas Edson) included a genealogical abstract derived from _A
Genealogical History of the Stewarts_, 1798, by Andrew Stuart of
Torrance'. A caveat about this book: Andrew Stuart of Torrance wrongly
sought to claim that Stewart of Castlemilk (of whom Stuart of Torrance
was a cadet) was the senior legitimate male branch of the Stewarts. But
in order to build a case, Stuart garbled the early generations of the
Stewarts of Darnley, the Stewarts of Castlemilk, as well as the early
generations of the Stewarts of Garlies, who are (it appears) the real
senior legitimate male branch of the family. I mention this to
illustrate that Stuart of Torrance's book does have (as you'd expect)
several flaws and errors.
That being said, here is what Edson copied out of Stuart of Torrance's
book:
SIR WILLIAM STEWART of Castlemilk, wrongly identified by Stuart as the
William
Stewart who was killed in Feb. 1429 during the siege of Orleans. But
that
William died sine prole, and belonged to the Darnley branch. (William
Stewart of Castlemilk was, it would appear, the son of that Sir John
Stewart
of Castlemilk whose daughter Elizabeth Stewart married Sir Robert Lyle
of
Duchal and became the mother of the 1st. Lord Lyle. But on this point
Stuart was again in error--he claimed that Elizabeth was daughter of
this
William, whereas she was instead William's younger sister.)
WALTER STEWART of Arthurly, fourth son of Sir William Stewart of
Castlemilk. No
wife shown.
WALTER STEWART of Arthurly, son of Walter Stewart of Arthurly. Married
Janet
Cameron, and had two daughters (no sons) , his coheiresses, ISABEL
STEWART and ELIZABETH STEWART. Isabel married Stewart of Minto,
a cadet of Stewart of Garlies, and Elizabeth married Cunynghame of
Craigends.
